Seabirds and Whales - A Full Day Yorkshire Adventure, England

It’s incredible to think you can see wonderful whales and dolphins (cetaceans) on home turf. Gone are the days where you need to travel overseas to see these incredible creatures. Although we can’t guarantee you’ll see activity (which is the same wherever you go), it’s amazing they’re right here on your doorstep and you have a really good chance of seeing them!

"Richard put together a great two-day bespoke tour for our diverse group of six - including a few armchair birders and amateurs. It was a great way to explore the Yorkshire Coastal area and we genuinely enjoyed all of the spots he took us. Lots of neat photos to share with friends and family. We would definitely plan a second trip with Yorkshire Coast Nature." - Ellen S.

Our North and East Yorkshire coast is also famous worldwide for its breeding seabirds and for being a seabird migration hot-spot. The significance of which has led to development of three Bird Observatories, Marine Protected Areas and several sites of international importance. There are literally hundreds and thousands of breeding, feeding and nesting birds here.

What you’ll see depends on the time of the year, but in recent seasons we have seen: Minke Whale, Bottle-nosed Dolphin, White-beaked Dolphin, Harbour Porpoise, Grey Seal, Common Seal, Long-tailed Skua, Arctic Skua, Pomarine Skua, Great Skua, Manx Shearwater, Sooty Shearwater, Cory’s Shearwater, Balearic Shearwater, Atlantic Puffin, Common Guillemot, Razorbill, Northern Fulmar, Northern Gannet, Red-throated Diver, Black-throated Diver, Great Northern Diver, Common Scoter, Velvet Scoter, Great Black-backed Gull, Lesser-black-backed Gull, Black-headed Gull, Common Gull, Mediterranean Gull, Caspian Gull, Black-legged Kittiwake and even Short-eared Owl

In late summer Minke Whales appear, following the Mackerel shoals. These fantastic mammals are the most regularly seen large cetaceans in our shores. Not so long ago, the Yorkshire coast was once famous for its whaling fleet, but it’s fast becoming famous for its whale watching!

Harbour Porpoise are with us throughout the year and seen on most of our trips. Bottle-nosed Dolphins are now being seen all year round on the coast in increasing numbers!

Our small group size means you’ll have ample opportunity to learn about bird, dolphin and whale species and take photographs. We welcome anyone from beginners to the more experienced, which when in a small group, feels like you’re part of a team.

These special, full day adventures include a land-based wildlife walk and five hours at sea.  They leave from the wonderful fishing village of Staithes too.

If you want a taster of watching wildlife at sea, have a look at our Seabirds and Whales – Twilight Short Trips instead. It includes a three-hour boat trip and are more accessible to a wider range of people - but still with all the WOW-factor.

One thing’s for sure, these are wonderful experiences!

PLEASE NOTE: If you have any mobility issues, please email us prior to booking. Access to the boat is by a short ladder from the harbour side. Here is our email address if any questions: info@yorkshirecoastnature.co.uk

Richard showed us numerous locations in the Yorkshire area. We experienced both coastal and forest habitats seeing a great assortment of birds totally new to us from the U.S. He added a bit of cultural and historical information about the places we visited as well. What was special was the unexpected discoveries that Richards skill and knowledge made possible to spot. It was a wonderful learning experience and we look forward to a trip on our next visit over.
