Seabirds and Whales – A Twilight Yorkshire Adventure, England
A half-day Yorkshire Seabirds & Whale Watching Trip which is leisurely paced and available on request. These special three-hour afternoon/evening boat trips depart from the picturesque fishing village of Staithes and are designed to give people a chance to observe these majestic marine mammals without having to travel overseas.
On this Yorkshire Whale and Seabirds trip which cetacean species you will see depends on the time of the year, but recent seasons have found Minke Whales, Bottle-nosed Dolphins, White-beaked Dolphins, Harbour Porpoises, Grey Seals and Common Seals.
The best chance to observe Minke Whales is in late summer, which sees them following the mackerel shoals. Not so long ago, the Yorkshire coast was famous for its whaling fleet, but now it’s fast becoming a prime whale watching destination. Conversely, Harbour Porpoise are with us throughout the year and are seen on most of our Yorkshire Whale and Seabirds trips, while Bottle-nosed Dolphins are now being seen in increasing numbers all year round.
The North and East Yorkshire coast is also famous worldwide for its breeding seabirds and for being a seabird migration hotspot, playing host to Long-tailed, Arctic, Pomarine and Great Skuas, Manx, Sooty, Cory’s and Balearic Shearwaters, Atlantic Puffins, Common Guillemots, Razorbills, Northern Fulmars, Northern Gannets, Red-throated, Black-throated and Great Northern Divers, Common and Velvet Scoters, Black-legged Kittiwakes and Great Black-backed, Lesser-black-backed, Black-headed, Mediterranean, Caspian and Common Gulls – even Short-eared Owls. The significance of this avian biodiversity has led to the development of three bird observatories, marine protected areas and several sites of international importance.
Our small group size for each Yorkshire Whale and Seabirds trip means you’ll have ample opportunity to learn about bird, dolphin and whale species and take photographs. We welcome anyone from beginners to the more experienced naturalists. We can also offer full day trips comprising a land-based wildlife walk followed by five hours at sea.
