Yorkshire Dales Birds Discovery Day, England

Upland Yorkshire Dales Birdwatching Discovery Day in England

On this full-day Yorkshire Dales Birds Discovery, you will be right in the middle of the northern Yorkshire Dales, a wonderful place for birding! It is a relaxed-paced trip available on request where you can expect to see around 40 species of bird, including 10-15 upland specialists.

The habitats range from traditional hay meadows in the lower valleys with heather-clad tops. In Spring, the valleys are filled with the calls of waders: Curlew, Lapwing, Snipe, and Redshank are all present. Upon the tops, the distinctive plaintive whistle of the Golden Plover can be readily heard.

One of the specialities of this trip is the much sought-after Black Grouse. This area of the Dales is the English stronghold of this species. The commoner Red Grouse can also be seen throughout the area, often displaying right by the roads. Other popular species seen on this itinerary include summer migrants such as Ring Ouzel, Tree Pipit, Redstart, and Pied Flycatcher, and Dipper and Grey Wagtails are common on the fast-flowing upland rivers. We may even stumble across Merlin on the higher ground.

On this tour, we welcome anyone from beginners to the more experienced, who wish to join a small, enthusiastic group. Using a network of contacts in the uplands, we can tailor the trips to the requests of the group, weather conditions, and the whereabouts of the best birds on the day.

Please note that transport is not provided on this day tour, but all sites will be in close proximity to the meeting point on the village green in Reeth near Richmond. Grid Ref: SE 037 993 Access 25 min drive west from Richmond via the A6108 and onto the B6270 park in the area opposite the shops and the Black Bull pub.
