Winter Birdwatching Tour in Bulgaria
An 8-day Winter Birding Bulgaria Tour which is leisurely paced and available on set departure. The main point of this special winter trip to the western coast of the Black Sea is to see the thousands of Red-breasted Geese that stay there for the winter. There are a lot of White-fronts and a few of the very rare Lesser White-fronted Geese. There are also a lot of divers, grebes, ducks, and other waterfowl (Shelduck, White-headed Duck, Ferruginous Duck and Smew).
If that doesn't whet your appetite, how about a follow-up cast with the Pygmy Cormorant, the Bittern, and some famous raptors like the White-tailed and Spotted Eagles, the Merlin, and the Rough-legged and Long-legged Buzzards? If the weather is good, we will also go up to the UNESCO site Srebarna Biosphere reserve on the Danube to see Dalmatian Pelicans in their breeding plumage up close. There is a good chance of seeing an Eagle Owl, and there is a small chance that a Greater Black-headed Gull will show up.
Woodpeckers like the White-backed, Grey-headed, Black, Syrian, and Middle-spotted are common. Other birds that fly by include the Sombre Tit, the Crested and Calandra Larks, the Great Grey Shrike, and, if you're lucky, the Lapland and Pine Buntings.
For the winter Birding Bulgaria tour, the list of birds is very good. The main places to visit along the Romanian Black Sea coast are the brackish lagoons Sinoe, Zmeica, Histria, and Vadu, which are in the southern part of the Danube Delta. Lakes Durankulak and Shabla in the north, Vaya (Bourgas lake), and Atanasovsko in the south, and the steppes of Cape Kaliakra and the riparian forests of Kamchia are the most visited wetlands along the Bulgarian coast.
Mammals, like three kinds of dolphins, are also on the list, and a powerful spotlight will help find them after dark. Our main goals are the Jackal, Raccoon Dog, Marbled Polecat, and Steppe Polecat, all of which are fairly common.
Winter Birding Bulgaria Tour highlights include:
- Lakes Durankulak and Shabla
- Travelling South and to the Ancient City of Sozopol
- Visit the great wetlands of Lakes Vaya and Atanasovsko
- Might see the very rare Pallas's Gull in addition to the species we've already seen
