Wild Herzegovina Spring Birdwatching Tour - 8 Days

Wild Herzegovina Spring Birdwatching Tour
1295

Herzegovina is southern region in Bosnia and Herzegovina with wonderful limestone landscapes, lots of
birds, but only a handful of serious birdwatchers. It is pretty much unexplored so when you are birding, you don’t bump into hordes of birdwatchers, which makes it an attractive destination!

There is a wide variety of habitats, that are just 30 minutes away by car, from our base, the city of Mostar.
This is why Herzegovina is such a wonderful destination for nature lovers.

The tours are run at a relaxed and comfortable walking pace which allows more time for photography and detailed observation of birds and other wildlife we see on the way.

Our base will be in historic city of Mostar Our base will be in historic city of Mostar

Day 1
Day 1 - Arrive at Dubrovnik airport, Karst fields (Part I)

With seasonally flooded land, alluvial forest, seasonal marshes, pools and permanent streams, karst fields provide important stop-over for migrating birds using the Adriatic Flyway. In Southeastern Europe, large agricultural basins surrounded by dry mountains fill up at regular intervals with water and become huge water lands. There are around 140 such karst fields in the Dinaric region, stretching from Slovenia to Albania. Until recently little was known about this route but today we know that in fact millions of birds fly twice-yearly along this migration route between their breeding grounds and their wintering places. The Mediterranean and the Dinaric Alps represent major hurdles they have to overcome on their way. They can only survive if there are safe, intact resting places on their route - karst fields. On our first day, we will explore Popovo Polje karst field, and slowly birdwatching on our way to Mostar. We will be greeted with glorious blasts of Nightingale song. We will look for Sombre Tit, Black-headed Bunting, Black-eared Wheatear, Turtle Dove, Eastern Orphean Warbler, Eastern Subalpine Warbler, Cirl Bunting, Blue Rock Thrush, Golden Oriole, Corn Bunting, Woodchat Shrike, Wryneck etc...

Day 2
Day 2 - Dinaric Alps (Part I)

Deep canyons, crystal-clear streams, alpine meadows, high altitude woodlands, steep valleys, gorges and green mountain lakes characterize this area - these are the majestic Dinaric Alps, one of Europe's most unexplored mountain ranges where nature is still mostly preserved and intact. The long chain of the Dinaric Alps, stretches from northwest Croatia through the heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina and into Montenegro, finishing on the Albanian border. Herzegovina and eastern Bosnia host the highest and wildest of this mountain range. We will visit Blidinje Nature Park nested between two mountains on 1100 m. above sea level. Species to see: Rock Partridge, Golden Eagle, Goshawk, Crested Tit, Lesser Whitethroat, Rock Thrush, Ring Ouzel, Short-toed Eagle, Nutcracker, Crossbill, Rock Bunting, Honey Buzzard etc...

Day 3
Day 3 - Subalpine & Mediterranean Karst

Today we will visit Podvelezje region which is unique because the villagers insist on preserving the old way of life, and live at one with nature. Situated at 700 m. above sea level in central Herzegovina, the Podveležje Plateau rests in between the towering peaks of Velez Mountain and city of Mostar. The plateau is vast (stretches over 20 kilometres north to south), isolated, wild and beautiful. For centuries it has been home to highland shepherds and a traditional way of life. The landscape is harsh, arid and seemingly barren karst dotted with small forests of beech and oak trees. Species to see: Rock Partridge, Easter Orphean Warbler, Black-eared Wheatear, Blue Rock Thrush, hawfinch, Red-backed Shrike, Woodchat Shrike, Lesser Gray Shrike, Levant Sparrowhawk, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Syrian Woodpecker, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Wryneck, Bee-eater, Hoopoe, Golden Oriole, Cirl Bunting, Eastern Subalpine warbler, Turtle Dove, Crag Martin, Alpine Swift, Pallid Swift, Eastern Olivaceous Warbler, Rock Nuthatch etc...

Day 4
Day 4 - Neretva Delta

Today we will travel along neretva river from Mostar all the way to its end in Adriatic Sea where it creates beautiful wetlands. The eight arms of the delta of the river Neretva form a pattern like a huge bird's foot. And delta lakes, fed by underground springs, narrow river valleys, forests of reeds, lagoons, lush common land pastures, sand banks, riparian forests and river branches covered in aquatic plants create a veritable bird paradise. Reclaimed land is covered by broad arable fields with a well developed network of irrigation channels which slowly transformed into an excellent natural habitat. Species to see: Caspian Tern, Sandwich Tern, Pygmy Cormorant, Pied Avocet, Spoonbill, Western Yellow Wagtail (race feldegg), Marsh sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Black-winged Stilt, Little Bittern, Kentish Plover, Squacco Heron, Sardinian Warbler, Great Reed Warbler, Zitting Cisticola, Spotted Redshank, Colared Pratincole etc...

Day 5
Day 5 - Hutovo Blato Marshlands

Hutovo Blato Nature Park is sub‐Mediterranean wetland oasis, located 20 km from the Adriatic Sea in the karst terrain along the lower course of the Neretva River. It is primarily composed of marshlands that were created by the underground aquifer system of the Krupa River. Hutovo Blato Nature Park is part of the Neretva Delta and one of the most valuable habitats for migratory birds and waterbirds in Europe. Accordingly it is protected as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. Hutovo Blato Nature Park is a crucially important stop-over site especially for those birds using the Adriatic Flyway to migrate between their summer and their winter habitats. It provides a unique oasis amongst the harsh arid karst of Herzegovina. Species to see: Pygmy Cormorant, Ferruginous Duck, Squacco Heron, Western Cattle Egret, Great Egret, Little Bittern, Great Reed Warbler, Moustached warbler, Golden Oriole, Black-necked Grebe, Red-crested Pochard, Osprey, White-tailed Eagle, Penduline Tit, Wryneck, Bee-eater, Wood sandpiper, Glossy Ibis, Whiskered Tern, White-winged Tern, Black tern, Purple Heron, Marsh Harrier, Black Woodpecker, Red-footed Falcon etc...
