Tambopata Clay Lick & Macaws Tour, Peru

Peru Macaws and Parrots Tambopata Tour

This leisurely paced 3-day Tambopata Clay Lick & Macaws Tour is available on request and based at the Explorer's Inn in southern Peru. The focus of the trip is on the wide range of  parrots, parakeets and macaws that inhabit Tambopata National Park and daily visit its famous clay lick.

The birds congregate at the Explorer’s Inn Clay Lick to ingest the red clay which cleanses their guts and also supplements their diet with minerals. The Tambopata clay lick is the ideal place to watch interesting animal activity in a way that does not disturb their natural behaviour.

"It was my first visit to a rain forest in South America. For two nights, my trip companions and I slept at Explorer Inn. The location was excellent. We went on numerous trips with knowledgeable local guides. In the forest, we had night and day walking trips. We spent the entire day and night exploring the river and its wildlife. Our rooms had limited electricity, which is to be expected." - Yuksel W.

But that is not all you will enjoy on this specialist Tambopata macaw tour. You will also witness the fascinating hunting techniques of the White Spectacled Cayman on the Tambopata River. And gain spectacular views of the Amazon rainforest from the vantage point of our canopy tower, 46m above the forest floor.

Another exciting activity on this Tambopata clay lick trip will be the night walk through the Amazon jungle to learn how the Peruvian night fauna lives in this complex environment.

Your stay will be at the comfortable Explorer's Inn, one of the oldest and most historic lodges in Peru, that blends hospitality with scientific research into rainforest flora and fauna, with an emphasis on conservation.

Tambopata Clay Lick & Macaws Tour highlights include:

  • A visit to the Explorer’s Inn Clay Lick to spot Red and Green Macaws, Scarlet Macaws, Chestnut-fronted Macaws, Orange-cheeked Parrots, Blue-headed Parrots, White-bellied Parrots, among others
  • Night excursion to find White Caymans on the Tambopata River banks
  • Walks through pristine Amazon rainforest to see the area's unique flora and fauna and learn about their value
  • Views from the top of a 46m canopy tower

Day 1
Day 1 - Arrival

Guests are received at the airport and taken to the office, where you will be able to repack and leave in storage anything that you will not be needing on this part of your trip. We then continue on to the port in the native community of Infierno, from which we will embark on an hour and a half boat ride to Explorer’s Inn Tambopata Ecolodge.

During this journey guests will receive a boxed lunch and there will be an obligatory stop the the La Torre control point to register our entrance into the Tambopata National Reserve. Upon arrival guests will be greeted by the lodge manager, who will give useful recommendations and information to ensure an enjoyable stay.

After a rest, our naturalist guide will give an informative presentation about the distinct species of caiman that can be observed in the Tambopata National Reserve, in order to allow guests to learn more about this endangered species.

We again board our boat to start the nighttime search of caimans in the Tambopata River. Our naturalist guide uses a spotlight in order to locate them on the banks of the river, so that we can observe them from a respectable distance.

Day 2
Day 2 - claylick

We wake early to visit the parrot claylick, which is a 10 minute boat ride from the lodge. A claylick is an exposed area of clay with higher concentrations of salts and other important minerals, where parrot species converge to eat. In our case this is a small wall close to the river, allowing observation of various species of parrots and parakeets which you can see eating the clay. We will then return to the lodge walking one of our trails, where if we are lucky, we may see other animals in their natural habitat.

We visit our 42 meter high tower in order to enjoy the spectacular views of the sunset and surroundings. We have the chance to see a variety of fauna species, including types of macaws, parrots, toucans and monkeys.

Your naturalist guide will take you on a night walk to see the jungle from another perspective. This is the time to see unique insects, amphibians, owls and perhaps other species if you are lucky.

Day 3
Day 3 - Departure

We have an early breakfast and get ready for our departure from the lodge. The time of departure is programmed according to the flight times for guests finishing their tour on the same day. Guests are taken from the port to our Puerto Maldonado office, and then on to the airport.

  1. A fantastic stay
    Yuksel W01 Apr 2019

It was my first visit to a rain forest in South America. For two nights, my trip companions and I slept at Explorer Inn. The location was excellent. We went on numerous trips with knowledgeable local guides. In the forest, we had night and day walking trips. We spent the entire day and night exploring the river and its wildlife. Our rooms had limited electricity, which is to be expected. The room was large enough for three people, although it was a touch filthy, and we were told that the rooms had just been painted before we arrived, so it smelled like paint. The eating setting was lovely, and the meal was delicious. Overall, I'd say we had a fantastic experience there. Yomi was our guide, and I want to thank him again for showing us around the Amazon.
