Half-Day Birdwatching by Boat Trip in Tagus Estuary, Portugal
A half-day Tagus Estuary Birding Trip to experience birding by boat. Enjoy the wonderful seabirds and moments to capture the wildlife.
As a Marine Biology and traced my academic and professional steps with enthusiasm and as a nature Lover, I began gaining interest in Birding. I then engaged in a Marine Biodiversity and Conservation International Masters and created several birdwatching campaigns along with my Master fellows.
Our project on Nature Tourism provides alternative programmes where our guests are closer to nature departing from an urban environment. Diversifying the demands on boat trips in Lisbon is also part of your objectives.
My sailing experience allied to the wildlife interest allowed us to create this unique trip that some consider it a wildlife perspective of Lisbon. Up to 2,5 hours, venture with us on an 8,5m RIB, with comfortable and safe conditions along with the secret birding spots in the Tagus Estuary.
We will take you on a birdwatching boat safari, where I, as an Ornithologist, will take you closer to special places that water or shorebirds use are shelters, feeding ground or breeding areas.
A guided Estuary birdwatching trip where you will learn several facts about one of the most important wetlands in the Iberia Peninsula, the Tagus Estuary. Besides frequent sightings of birds of prey, the gulls, terns, herons, waders and shorebirds are spotted all year round, composing more than 29 different species. Several duck and goose species can also be sighted during the winter season.
SeaEO Tours has been certified by the Portuguese Tourism bureau with the Clean & Safe stamp. We are committed to preventing the Covid-19 outbreak, therefore we will disinfect the boats after each tour, wear face masks, disinfect all passenger's hands and avoid social contact. Safety First!

Alternative Tour Name: Birdwatching in the Estuary Boat Tour
Starting in Lisbon center, under the big red majestic bridge, we depart from Doca de Santo Amaro, in the neighborhood of Alcântara. For the short safety and activity briefing, it is important to arrive a couple of minutes prior. It is important to depart with the tide rising, so we can check the mudflats along the Tagus Estuary canals and sail safely towards Moita, where you will find the hotspots for waders and other aquatic birds. These secrets habitats are where they find food, shelter, and bushes to nest. On the way back you will pass in front of Praça do Comércio (Terreiro do Paço), the main city square in Lisbon. During 2 to 2,5 hours, venture on a breathless odyssey along the wetlands to spot different migratory bird species.
Wildlife species expected to see:
The Tagus Estuary provides food and shelter for several bird species which contribute for a diverse ecosystem. Because most of the wetland depends greatly on the Ocean tides, it provides huge mudflats during half-day thus feeding grounds for most of the Aquatic Birds. When the tide is higher, you will find bird species closer to shore, in salt marshes, old salt plains or lagoon systems.
Medium and big-sized wader birds or shorebirds, feed and breed on the marsh and wet meadows of the Tagus Estuary. Huge wader bird flocks can be found during winter, and the wetlands are especially important for several species between September and May. Migratory winter birds use this Estuary as a shelter due to mild temperatures. It is estimated that around 120.000 birds’ winter in this Important Bird Area (PT021) wetland.
Iconic species spotted during our Birdwatching by Boat are the pink flamingos, Osprey, Spoonbills and Glossy Ibis. Around 23 of wader species can be spotted such as Black Winged Stilt, Eurasian Oystercatcher, Ruddy Turnstone, Kentish Plover, Common Sandpiper, Redshank, Black-tailed Godwit, Whimbrel, Ruff, Common Snipe among others. Other species as Collared pratincole, Little Egret, White Heron, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, and Northern Lapwing are greatly part of these ecosystems.
Huge flocks of Pied Avocet individuals shelter between late August and January representing up to 25% of the European winter population.
