A 15-day birdwatching tour to Southeastern Peru which is probably one of the best birding places in the neo-tropics, there are more than 1000 bird species between the Manu and the Tambopata areas. After flying from Lima to Puerto Maldonado take a boat up the Río Madre de Dios to Los Amigos Biological Station, the fabulous trail system at Los Amigos allows visiting a different kind of habitats like terra firme and varzea forests, palm swamps, and bamboo patches. The diversity of wildlife in this area is just astonishing (birds, monkeys, frogs, snakes). Los Amigos is probably the best area in Peru for raptors and monkeys. Then go back to Puerto Maldonado to take another boat to the Tambopata National Reserve. Inside the reserved stay at three different lodges: Posada Amazonas, Tambopata Research Center, and Refugio Amazonas. In Tambopata, stay most of your time at Tambopata Research Center, where the bird diversity is just amazing. Visit the canopy tower, the macaw clay lick (the largest macaw clay lick known in Peru), oxbow lakes with Giant River Otters and Caimans: also, great chances to see anacondas, jaguars and tapirs. The tour ends in the city of Puerto Maldonado, where you will take a flight back to Lima. As a bonus, at the beginning of the trip, a day for birding around Lima included, to see Humboldt Penguins, Peruvian Thick-knee, or Inca Terns!
