Wildebeest Migration Experience in Serengeti, Tanzania

This moderately-paced 7-Day Serengeti Wildebeest Migration Tour is available on request and has been designed specifically to maximise your chances of witnessing the awe-inspiring Great Wildebeest Migration.

We have designed the itinerary of this Serengeti Wildebeest Migration trip to include both Lobo – the area north of the central Serengeti National Park – and Wagakuria – located in the remote northern part of the park – where the majority of the Great Wildebeest Migration usually takes place from August to October.

This is when the migrating animals head north out of the central Serengeti, splitting into two routes. The main group heads into the western corridor, crossing the Grumeti River in spectacular stampedes, hopefully evading the crocodiles waiting to snatch them as they surge across the river. The wildebeest continue to move steadily across the Grumeti region, making another perilous river crossing over the Mara to reach the lush grazing in Kenya's Masai Mara.

To save on unnecessary travel time and increase your game viewing experience, you will take flight between Serengeti National Park and Arusha town.

This will give you time on your Serengeti Wildebeest Migration adventure to visit the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcano, located within the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It serves as a habitat for a significant number of species, including the critically endangered Black Rhinoceros, as well as large herds of Zebras, Thomson and Grant Gazelles, Hippopotamus, Black-backed Jackals, Hyenas, Serval Cats and as many as 400 different species of bird, including huge flocks of Flamingos.

Serengeti Wildebeest Migration Tour highlights include:

  • Witness the awe-inspiring Great Wildebeest Migration from Tanzania to Kenya
  • Opportunity to see the so-called 'Big Five' species – Lions, Leopards, Rhinos, Elephants and Buffalos – at the Great Serengeti National Park
  • A game drive from the Lobo area to the Wagakuria area
  • Visit the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcano

Day 1
Day 1 - Arrival in Arusha

A staff member of WildReality Safari will pick you up from the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). From here, you will be driven to a hotel in Arusha and brief you on your upcoming safari. Enjoy a restful night before beginning your adventure tomorrow!

Arusha commonly referred to as "A" Town by locals, is located at the base of Mount Meru, the fifth-highest mountain in Africa.

The city benefits from the altitude's nice climate and verdant surroundings. Arusha is not a particularly picturesque city in and of itself, and many tourists only see it as a necessary pit stop before their safari really gets going.

However, for those who are willing to look beyond their air-conditioned safari trucks and satellite-TV-equipped hotel rooms, Arusha has lots to offer thanks to the inherent charm of the Tanzanians and the energy of a quickly expanding city.

Day 2
Day 2 - Arusha to Central Serengeti

After breakfast, we'll travel to the Serengeti National Park in the heart of untamed Africa, where boundless plains stretch as far as the eye can see. We'll head to the Lobo region, which is near the Seronera region (central Serengeti National Park). The wildebeest migration often passes through the Lobo area every year in late October or early November on its way to the southern Serengeti National Park and again in late July or early August on its way to Kenya's Masai Mara Game Reserve.

We will arrive in time for lunch and enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti National Park.

Day 3
Days 3 & 4 - Serengeti (Central ) – Northern Serengeti (Kogatende Area)

After breakfast, we go to the Wagakuria region of the Serengeti National Park, which is located in the park's extreme north. While traveling from the Lobo area to the Wagakuria area, we will go on a game drive. As we travel north, there is a good chance of seeing giraffes, plain game, buffalo herds, and elephants.

We get at the lodge in time for lunch, and afterward, we'll go on an afternoon game drive. Depending on rainfall patterns, the wildebeest migration typically occurs in the Wagakuria region from August to October. The Mara River, which flows through a significant portion of the northern Serengeti National Park, presents the migration with its most challenging barrier. Witnessing the frantic herds of wildebeest crossing the Mara River is amazing.

Day 4
Days 5 & 6 - Northern Serengeti (Kogatende)

Enjoy a full day of game viewing in the Wagakuria region after breakfast. With prides of lion up to 30 strong, resident wildlife populations are extremely high in this region of the park, but from August to October, the area transforms into a wildlife haven.

The Mara River is the main feature, and it is normal to witness the herds cross it once, heading north, and then again, heading south, a few days later. Please be aware that finding a crossing might occasionally depend on chance and is very difficult. A herd can be spotted near a river, but it takes them a few days to determine whether to cross or not.

This area is a stunning region with kopjes, woodland, riverine vegetation and open plains, similar to Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve.

Day 5
Day 7 - Northern Serengeti (Kogatende) – Arusha

After breakfast, you drive for the half day game drive, After the tour you will transferred back to Arusha town.

Best time to Visit - Tanzania

Tanzania is best visited during the dry season, which runs from late June to October, when wildlife watching is at its peak. The Serengeti’s wildebeest migration takes place in June and July, and the best time to view wildebeest calving is late January to February. The southern and western circuit parks, in contrast to the more popular northern circuit parks, are best visited during the dry season (June to October). Best Time: June to October (All parks), June-July and January-February (Serengeti for the wildebeest migration and calving) High Season: July to March (northern circuit parks; they get crowded), July to October (southern and western circuit parks; they don’t really get crowded any time of the year) Low Season: April and May (northern circuit parks still get quite a few visitors unlike the southern and western circuit parks, where many lodges close down) Best Weather: June to October (Little to no rainfall) Worst Weather: March and April (Peak of Wet season)
