Pelagic Birding Trip in Lisbon, Portugal
A half-day trip in Lisbon focusing Pelagic Birds or Seabirds of Portugal which can be found along with cetacean species, such as dolphins and whales. It is highly likely that on a Dolphin Watching Boat Tour in Lisbon our crew finds specific seabird species. Although most customers enjoy better dolphin vibrant activity near the boat, several seabird species are key for spotting these magnificent marine mammals. Seabird species are mainly opportunistic feeders and thus using the opportunity whenever dolphins and whales bring up to the sea surface shoals of fish to feed.
As we began to understand the importance of this cooperation and opportunistic behaviour of marine life, it also generated a bigger interest within Birdwatching local and international communities for more than a decade in Portugal Therefore, we have created this unique and once-a-month Ornithology-oriented ocean safari tour to find pelagic birds off Lisbon coastline.
Our main objective is to spot as many experiences to observe seabirds of Portugal and other species as possible during the 3-to-4-hour venture aboard our 8,5m RIB for 12 guests. As the Tagus river mouth deposits daily tonnes of organic matter and nutrients, phytoplankton and zooplankton play extremely important roles he food chain keeps developing. In turn, shoals of fish feed on these, creating higher biomass accumulations off Lisbon. They attract predators like bigger fish, sharks, cetacean, cephalopods and of course, seabirds.
SeaEO Tours has been certified by the Portuguese Tourism bureau with the Clean & Safe stamp. We are committed in preventing the Covid-19 outbreak, therefore we will disinfect the boats after each tour, wear face masks, disinfect all passenger's hands and avoid social contact. Safety First!

Starting in Lisbon centre, under the big red majestic bridge, we depart from Doca de Santo Amaro, in the neighbourhood of Alcântara. For the short safety and activity briefing, it is important to arrive a couple of minutes prior. Before leaving the Tagus Estuary through the river mouth, you will sail under the 25th of April bridge. You will see the beautiful monuments in Belem neighbourhood, and head towards the wide Atlantic Ocean and get the best view from the coastline. Depending on the ocean conditions and the know-how of the crew, we will sail closer to Cascais or further down South above the Lisbon submarine Canyon or where high concentrations of seabirds are flying. Most probably we will spend some minutes stopped and enjoying the seabird fuss around the boat with help of chum. After the seabird watching odyssey, get to know some facts about the Bugio lighthouse, the Tower of Belém, and the Discoveries Monument.
Wildlife species expected to see:
Marine biodiversity in the Atlantic Coastlines is very rich. Besides the upwelling events, currents that rise nutrients from the deeper ocean, the river mouths transport hundreds of thousands of minerals and organic matter. The biological diversity is generated by such important events as it is of the geographical position of Lisbon coastline. As the Tagus river works as a maternity ground for numerous marine and freshwater species, such as sole fish, sea bass, octopus, cuttlefish or even seahorses, it attracts other predatory species. Shorebirds and seabirds benefit from the rich environments that compose different ecosystems. Seabird species may vary in shape and sizes and all adapted to harsh marine environments and feed on fish and invertebrates. The most frequent species that occur all year round are the Northern Gannet, Sabine gull, yellow-legged gull, Lesser Black-backed gull and terns (Common tern, Little tern and Sandwich tern). During winter our sightings are normally more diverse, which include the European Storm-petrel, Balearic Shearwater, Arctic Jaeger, Great Cormorant or European Shag on the rocks, Common Black-headed Gull, Sabine’s Gull, Great Shearwater, Sooty Shearwater, Manx Shearwater. During Summer Cory’s Shearwater are part of the seascape surface. You may have the chance of spotting a single Common Murre, flocks of Black Scoter flying at a distance or a Razorbill.
