Hummingbird Tour in Sacred Valley, Peru
This is a half-day Sacred Valley Hummingbird Trip near Cusco in Peru which is moderately paced and available daily. Just 60km from Cusco City there is a location where 16 species of hummingbird have been recorded, as well as birds that are endemic to the Peruvian Andes.
Peru has 125 different species of hummingbirds and many of them are located in the Andes. Sacred Valley is a delightfully accessible area for general birding if you are visiting Cusco to see the Incan citadel of Macchu Piccu. The bonus is that it is also a great opportunity to see some of these amazing little nectar-sipping birds.
" José was an excellent guide, pointing out and identifying so many birds. His enthusiasm shows in his explanations and insights into the birds and the region. Ensifera camp is a unique venue to enjoy a wide variety of hummingbirds. So exciting to be able to enjoy watching and photographing these beautiful birds! I highly recommend José and this tour. Fantastic! - Karen Kuklinski
Hummingbird gardens are popular features in many parts of South America but not so common in Peru. However, Ensifera Camp in the wetlands was one of the first in the area and it gives birdwatchers the opportunity to observe the birds at close quarters from the comfort of a hide on this Sacred Valley hummingbird tour. This special set-up works well because the hide has been constructed at a perfect altitude for hummingbird activity. It provides a perfect feeding spot within the Sacred Valley for hummingbirds to congregate.
It is also a particularly good spot for photographers to set up because you can have good control of angle and lighting to snap the birds as they visit the feeders.
And it doesn’t matter if you are travelling with someone who is not an ardent birdwatcher, this place and the easy timing of the tour, being just half a day, will keep everyone entertained. They will be fascinated by the variety of colours and shapes of these tiny Peruvian birds and thrilled by the speed of their wingbeats as they zip between the feeders.
An additional incentive for signing up for this Sacred Valley hummingbird trip is that you will hopefully be able to tick off two endemic hummingbirds of the Peruvian Andes as well as two ovenbirds and a Mountain-Finch.
If you have a little more time to spend on your holiday, you might like to consider a longer trip such as the Cusco Bird Watching and Culture Tour, Peru.
