Birding Peru Photo Tour

Birding Photography Tour in Northeast Peru

This 12-day birding Peru photo tour is a leisurely paced trip available as a set-departure or on request. The aim is to find and photograph around 100 species of birds, including 10 endemics, as well as other wildlife species.

"I just spent eight days with Wilson Diaz from Green Tours. We explored outside Iquitos and Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. He was extremely knowledgable about birds and was fascinating to talk with. He was very helpful both in the field and into the evening after our tours. I hope to work with him again on another project. I highly recommend him. Fantastic." -Charley Voorhis.

During this photography and birding tour of Peru we will focus on the unique Peruvian bird species found on the eastern slopes of the Andes. This is one of the most diverse places in the neotropics for birdwatching and affords excellent possibilities for bird photography. Plus, in recent years, several private reserves in North Peru, especially in the Alto Mayo and Huallaga Valleys, have developed good bird hummingbird and tanager photo opportunities through the use of feeders.

Our Birding Peru Photo Tour starts in Tarapoto and we first visit the Cordillera Escalera Reserve. There we hope to photograph birds such as Paradise Tanager, Ivory-billed Aracari, Dotted Tanager and Bay-headed Tanager as well as many others.

Then we move to the Alto Mayo Valley, where we stay near the city of Moyobamba. The Waqanki hummingbird feeders are our first stop, with chances to photograph specialties such as Rufous-crested Coquette and some 20 species of hummingbirds. The Tahuishco Tower is also a good vantage point for bird photography, with colourful birds such as Spot-breasted Woodpecker, Lettered Aracari and Great Antshrike paying a visit to nearby trees.

After a few days in Moyobamba, this Peruvian photography tour heads to the renowned Abra Patricia Owlet Lodge. We are bound to be welcomed by a myriad of hummingbirds attending the feeders. The trails and gardens around the lodge are also great for tanagers, flycatchers, antbirds and more. Furthermore, we will have the opportunity to photograph owls such as the Cinnamon Screech-Owl, Long-whiskered Owlet and White-throated Screech-Owl.

We will also visit the Fundo Alto Nieva Private Reserve for opportunities to photograph the Royal Sunangel hummingbird, along with other species of hummers and tanagers. A good array of other wildlife also comes to the feeders. We will take short walks to photograph specialties such as Johnson’s Tody-Flycatcher and Cinnamon-breasted Tody-Tyrant.

This Peru photo tour ends in Huembo, photographing the beautiful Marvelous Spatuletail hummingbird.

North Peru is an excellent destination for wildlife photographers. The ideal spot for your next bird photography tour.

Birding Peru Photo Tour highlights include:

  • A high diversity of bird species.
  • Well-set feeding stations for hummingbirds, tanagers, and tinamous, which gives excellent opportunities for photography.
  • The Alto Mayo mountains and the Marañon Valley, rich in endemic bird species.
  • Mixed-species flocks of birds almost every day.
  • Great opportunities to photograph the Marvelous Spatuletail hummingbird.

  2. A Great Birding Experience in Northern Peru
    Hank Tan25 Jul 2019

We came across Green Tour on the Blue Sky Wildlife website. Getting in touch with the contact person at Green Tour, Wilson, and working out a customized itinerary for the two of us was a smooth and pleasant process. Wilson turned out to be the guide for our entire 19-day trip, who is very diligent and pleasant. He was quite persistent in looking for birds throughout the trip, eg. finding Rainbow Starfrontlets and Shining Sunbeams out in the mountain roads above Leymabamba. Since we share the same interest in birding photography, I quite enjoyed his guidance throughout the trip. He was as patient as we were when waiting for the Marvelous Spatuletail to show up at the feeders at Huembo Lodge. All in all, this has been a very pleasant birding trip and I must say a good guide makes all the difference. We highly recommend birding with Green Tour.
