Spanish Pyrenees Wildlife Walking Holiday in Northern Spain

This 7-day Northern Spain Wildlife Walking Holiday is a leisurely paced trip available as either a set-departure or on request. It is the ideal holiday for active wildlife and nature lovers in one of Europe’s most unspoilt regions in the Spanish Pyrenees.

If you love nature, animals and the outdoors then you will love this Northern Spain trekking adventure. The walking is varied but the pace will always be slow, with regular stops as we look for interesting flowers, butterflies and insects. And, of course, we will always have a watchful eye for some of the amazing birds of the region and some of its notable mammals.

"Our repeat visit was all we had hoped for. We highly recommend this vacation because of the beautiful scenery, delicious food and abundant wildlife. Day outings with a bird, butterfly or flower expert are not to be missed. Walks through the beautiful mountain environment are not too taxing and you may be rewarded with sights of uncommon species like the distinctive Lammergeier." - Christine and Ed

On this Spain wildlife walking holiday the expert Aragon Active local guides will show you the abundance of fauna and flora of the area. They will also give you a little information about the geology, as well as relating some of the human stories from this secret corner of the Pyrenees.

We certainly have a fair amount of wildlife to show our guests to make their wildlife walking holiday in Spain a memorable one, with more than 1,500 species of flowers, 171 species of birds, over 131 species of butterfly - of which eight are endemic - and 32 different species of mammals.

This Spanish wildlife walking holiday is based in rural Aragon, which is one of Europe’s most unexplored and unspoilt regions. You will be staying in a renovated 17th-century farmhouse full of character and charm. The farmhouse is within the Pyrenees Geopark and close to the Ordesa National Park and the Natural Park of Sierra de Guara, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Ordesa National Park is also a World Biosphere Reserve and a ‘Special Protection Area for Birds’.

Our daily outings from our accommodation on this Spain wildlife walking holiday will take us on an exploration of these outstanding areas. In this way we make the most of our location with a return to good food, fine local wine at dinner time and a comfortable night's sleep before the next day's walk.

Northern Spain Wildlife Walking Holiday highlights include:

  • A chance to see the magnificent Bearded Vulture, aka Lammergeier
  • A slow and relaxed pace of walking with plenty of time to stop and observe the wildlife around you
  • Breathtaking views of the mountains of northern Spain

Casa Allue is located in a beautiful and peaceful valley; instead of traffic, you will sleep and wake to the gentle sound of cowbells. The mansion has been meticulously refurbished to meet strict environmental guidelines. Our room was spacious and inviting. Lucy, Simon, and Sofi are wonderful hosts who go out of their way to make you feel at ease. Even Hera the dog treats you as if you were a member of the family! Food for the great home-cooked meals is gathered locally, if possible, from their own garden and farm. They, along with the wonderful expert local guides they hire for the vacation, are passionate about the area and its environment, and they want to see it preserved. During our vacation I learned a lot on the holiday. It included so many memorable moments and visited different local habitats to show to their best the local flowers, birds, animals, butterflies, moths and the geology and history of the area. So much beauty! All meals, drinks and transport were included in the holiday and I feel it was excellent value for money.

Discover the wild and rugged beauty of Aragon in the Spanish Pyrenees under the skilled direction and loving hospitality of Lucy and Simon at Aragon Active for a really memorable experience. The lodging was fantastic, and the freshly prepared meal was outstanding. You won't have to worry about anything with the all-inclusive package, and the small group sizes are ideal for this type of vacation. We went orchid hunting with a plant expert, while Lucy detailed the geological development of the mountains, especially the Monte Perdido limestone massif. We heard nightingales, saw Wryneck, Woodcut Shrike, and Rock Thrushes, among many other species. It was a haven for animals. The day and night spent with local entomologist Enrique was a highlight. We spotted a variety of butterflies throughout the day and put up a moth net at night, collecting an incredible amount of moths that we inspected the next morning. It was sheer delight! A private vulture viewing with 80 Griffin vultures, 2 Egyptian Vultures, and 9 Lammergeiers was another highlight. They circled high above the mountains, their sharp eyes scouring the ground below for the next meal. It was an amazing sight to see. We went skinny diving in the turquoise waters of Janovas, a community abandoned for a dam that was never completed. In Ordesa National Park, Alberto, a mountain guide, brought us over the snowline. We glimpsed a Rock Creeper, saw U-shaped valleys, waterfalls, tree-lined gorges, marmots and chamois grazing. Magic

"We went on a wildlife and walking vacation for a week." The gorgeous mountains with so many spring flowers, as well as birds, animals, butterflies, and insects; * Enthusiastic local Spanish guides (botanist, ornithologist, and entomologist), as well as Simon and Lucy's knowledge (birds and geology/history respectively) were some of the highlights. * Wonderful host family that were flexible, accommodating, and knowledgable. * Excellent en-suite accommodations (bedrooms, common areas, etc.) – clean, comfortable, and with beautiful views * All-inclusive like you've never seen before — we didn't need any money because all of our coffee, drink, and meal breaks were covered, as well as personally cooked picnic lunches, tea and local pastries, wine with all evening meals, and so on. All of the food was found locally or even cultivated by Simon and Lucy, who prepared all of the meals personally, providing us with authentic Spanish cuisine. * Amazing attention to detail" "Well-planned outings with diversity and plenty of explanations, covering local history, culture, geology, flowers, birds, and wild creatures, among other things."
