Catalonia and Aragon Birding Tour, North-East Spain

This 8-day Catalonia and Aragon birdwatching tour in Spain is an easy-paced set departure trip. During the tour, we will be aiming for more than 220 species of birds, and some delicious examples of Catalan cuisine, interesting culture and fascinating history.

This grand tour of Catalonia and Aragon explores the most cosmopolitan regions in Spain for a birding tour and some of the country's most attractive landscapes. This is a land of contrasts. In the morning you can enjoy the majestic flight of Lammergeiers and the crisp sound of Citril Finches in the mountains, while in the afternoon you can admire the silhouettes of Little Bustards and Rollers on the steppes.

The list of birds in our Catalonia and Aragon birding tour will include top targets such as Bonelli's Eagle, Ortolan Bunting, Pin-tailed and Black-bellied Sandgrouse, Dupont's Lark, Western Orphean Warbler, Audouin's Gull, Common Rock Thrush, Citril Finch, Iberian Green Woodpecker, Bearded Tit, Montagu's Harrier, Little Bustard, Tengmalm's Owl, Squacco Heron, Eurasian Eagle Owl, Black Woodpecker, Eurasian Scops Owl, Red-necked Nightjar and Lesser Short-toed Larks.

The compact size of the region, its good roads and variety of habitats are some of the reasons this area has become one of the fastest-growing birding tour destinations in not only Spain but all of Europe. In just four hours' driving you can go from high mountain prairies to massive coastal wetlands, and in the middle you will have crossed semi-desert habitats and low hills covered with typical Mediterranean flora.

During the 8-day, 7-night Catalonia and Aragon birding tour, we will explore some of the birding hot spots at a time when the spring migration is at its peak. In late April and early May millions of birds cross the area on their trip between African and their European breeding grounds.

Catalonia and Aragon Birding Tour, North-East Spain highlights include:

  • Nightingales, Golden Orioles and Calandra Larks singing
  • Spring migration at its height
  • Top mountain species such as Bonelli's Eagle and Dupont's Lark
  • A wide variety of bird-rich habitats
  • Superb cuisine and interesting cultural experiences

I attended already two tours guided by Carles Oliver - Big Catalonia/Spain loop and Morocco. Carles is one of the best birdwatchers that I met in my life, excellent observiation skills and encyclopedic knowledge of all birds in the region. Thanks to him my bird list was full of lifers after each of the trip. Moreover, Carles is very nice with people and keep smiling and in good mood the whole trip. Highly recommended!

Between 2013 and 2018 we have made several birding trips with Carles from Barcelona Birding Point ranging from 1 day trips in Catalonia to 10 days birding in Morocco. Each trip has been a wonderful experience with excellent birding, fantastic landscapes, great food & accomodation and also excellent wildlife photography opportunities. Carles is an excellent guide, passionate about birding and conservation and he has a great approach to birdwatching, he is enthousiastic, energetic but never stressful and well organized. Highlights included: A wonderful 10 day trip in Central/Southern Morocco observing all the target birds, the trips to the Pyrenees including a visit a Vulture Feeding Station with fantastic close-up views of Bearded Vultures, European Black Vultures and Griffon Vultures. Birding the steppes with excellent close-up views of Dupont's Lark and a nocturnal birding trip observing 5 species of Owls and 2 Nightjar species! And our most recent mid-winter trip to Central Spain observing 8 Spanish Imperial Eagles, 50+ White-headed Ducks, Flocks of Great Bustards, 1000+ Cranes, Black-winged Kites and much more. We can highly recommend Barcelona Birding Point to all birders who want to experience a great birding experience!

Fantastic experience! I've hired birding guides all over the world and Sergi and Carles are two of the most skilled, most enthusiastic, and most personable individuals I've had the pleasure to bird with. I spent one full day with Sergi and another full day with Carles. I found them both easy to talk to and easy to spend a day with. They grew up in Barcelona, so they not only know where the birds are, they know great little places to eat and interesting stories about the area. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
