Catalonia Grand Tour
Catalonia Grand Tour explores the most cosmopolitan region in Spain. During the tour, we will enjoy some of the most attractive landscapes in the country. Yes, Catalonia is a land of contrasts. In the morning you can enjoy the majestic flight of Lammergeiers and the crispy sound of Citril Finches, while in the afternoon you can admire the silhouette of Litte Bustards and Rollers in the steppes. Along with Bulgaria, Catalonia offers the most diverse birdwatching in Europe for a single, 7-days based tour. Its small size, good roads and a massive variety of ambients (for European standards) are one of the reasons that have made this area as one of the faster-growing birding destinations in the continent. And this because of in a single 4 hours driving you can go from high mountain prairies to massive coastal wetlands, and in the middle, you have crossed semi-desertic ambients and mild hills covered by typical Mediterranean thyme-type scrubs.
Catalonia has a strong economy based on industry, HighTech and tourism. Barcelona, is its capital city, shows the best of the Catalan culture as it is an open and cosmopolitan city. But besides, the country still preserves key habitats and species. Traditional live is still alive, also in Barcelona, as the Catalan language is in the whole territory despite the scarce support by Spanish authorities. Yes, during the tour we will enjoy 220+ species of birds, but also good examples of Catalan cuisines, culture and way of life.
During the 8 days, 7 nights long Catalonia Grand Tour we will explore some of the best birding hot spots in the country, and we will do so in a gorgeous moment of the year! Yes, in late April and early May, the spring migration is on its peak and millions of birds cross the area in their trip between African and their European nesting grounds. And all of this when nesting season is at the very beginning! During the tour, we will enjoy several Nightingales, Golden Orioles and Calandra Larks singing.
The list of birds in our Catalonia Grand Tour will arrive well above 200 and it will include top targets such as Bonelli's Eagle, Lammergeier, Ortolan Bunting, Pin-tailed & Black-bellied Sandgrouses, Dupont's Lark, Western Orphean Warbler, Audouin's Gull, Common Rock Thrush, Citril Finch, Iberian Green Woodpecker, Bearded Tit, Montagu's Harrier, Little Bustard, Tengmalm's Owl, Squacco Heron, Eurasian Eagle Owl, Black Woodpecker, Eurasian Scops Owl, Red-necked Nightjar, Lesser Short-toed Larks...
During the tour, we will enjoy exclusive accommodations offering wonderful evening meals with some local wine. The rhythm of the tour is not high as bird activity collapses at midday neither the afternoon, allowing excellent birding all day long!
