Manu National Park Wildlife & Culture Tour

This is a moderately paced 4-day Manu Wildlife & Cultural Zone Tour, available on request, that takes you to the Manu National Park, which has the highest level of biodiversity of any protected area in the world. It is a trip of unparalleled beauty with a variety of habitats ranging from orchid-draped cloud forest where Spectacled Bears and Cock-of-the-Rocks live untroubled lives to pristine Amazon rainforest where you find 13 primate species and oxbow lakes frequented by Giant River Otters. A trip to Manu is a trip to a great wilderness area where wildlife is plentiful and over 1,000 species of birds have been recorded.

When the tour starts out from Cusco, the steep Andean slopes are clad in the stunted forest, temperate shrubbery and wet paramo, and we may well encounter such high-elevation species as Mountain Caracara, Shining Sunbeam and Moustached Flower-piercers. Because this tour is designed to be a combination of wildlife and culture, one stop along the way will take in the archeological site of a pre-Inca cemetery and Paucartambo village. If you are here from the 16th to the 18th of July you can experience one of the biggest street parties in Peru, the feast of the Virgin del Carmen.

On the next leg of this Manu wildlife trip we descend the famous Manu Road and cross the Madre de Dios River to stay at the comfortable Amazonia Lodge. Nearby is a lake where you can see White and Smooth-fronted Caiman, and there are plenty of trails into the rainforest and a canopy tower from which to view some of the jungle tree-dwellers such as Red Howler Monkeys. While in the area we will visit a coca farm and an orchid garden. In addition to these botanical delights we hope to find Military and Blue-headed Macaws.

At the end of the trip we return to Cusco, which will give you an opportunity to add an extension to your visit and go to the breath-taking ruins of Machu Picchu, citadel of the Incan culture.

Manu Wildlife & Cultural Zone Tour highlights include:

  • The cloud forests of the high Andes and their unique bird species
  • A pre-Inca burial site
  • White Caimen and Giant River Otters
  • Views from a jungle canopy tower
  • A visit to a specialist orchid garden

Day 1
Day 1 - Cusco to Paradise Lodge (Lower Manu cloud forest 1400m)

Today we will leave early, first driving through scenic intermontane valleys. We will make selected stops for the Lupacas Pre-Inca cemetery and Paucartambo village. Reaching a high mountain pass at Ajanaco, we will begin our journey into a vast intact wilderness area as we descend along the sinuous road that will take us to the Manu foothills. Along the extraordinary altitudinal transect that this remarkable road represents, new wildlife species continually appear whilst others drop out. Initially, the steep Andean slopes are clad in stunted forest, temperate shrubbery and wet paramo, and here we may well encounter such high-elevation species as Mountain Caracara, Shining Sunbeam and Moustached Flower-piercers.

A little lower down, where the magnificent cloudforests begin, we shall look out for the beautiful Orchids and the famous Andean cock-of-the-Rock at the Lek, proclaimed as Peru´s national bird. With a little luck we will see a Woolly Monkey and Brown capuchin Monkeys. We will stay for one night at the Paradise Lodge. Optional night walk in Lower Manu-cloudforest. L:D.

Day 2
Day 2 - Paradise Lodge to Amazonia Lodge 500m(1,750 feet)

After a final morning in the cloudforests we will descend further down the Manu road to the comfortable Amazonia Lodge with one lake which are easy to see the White Caiman and Smooth-fronted Caiman, plenty of trails and canopy tower. Today we will visit a Coca farm, Orchid Garden and with a modicum of luck we will find a Military and Blue-headed Macaws. Later we will cross the Alto Madre de Dios river to Amazonia Lodge. Our base for the next two nights stay, with optional night walks. B:L:D.

Day 3
Day 3 - Parrot Clay Lick & Machuwasi Lake

Early start to visit the small Parrot and Macaw Clay Lick, 25 minutes downriver along the Madre de Dios river bank. We will see Chestnut-Fronted Macaw, Blue-Headed Macaw, Dusky-Headed Parakeet, White-Eyed Parakeet, Blue-Headed Parrot and Yellow-Crowned Parrot. Parrots & Macaws are known to ingest clay because of its negative charge, binds potential toxins such as alkaloids and phenolics, it has been thought to prevent diarrhea, help treat intestinal parasites and supply vital minerals, parrots & macaws feed on plant material, particularly seeds and fruits, vegetation that is poor in sodium content. Clay lick soil had sodium concentrations the reason why parrots & macaws seek out specific clay licks. Then we will board our motorized canoe that we will take us to Machuwasi Lake. We will explore the lake for Hoatzins, Tanagers, Oropendolas and Horned Screamer and more. Night at Amazonia Lodge, with a optional night walk. B:L:D.

Not far from the lodge is a Macaw & Parrot Clay Lick visited by raucous groups of Blue-headed Macaws in the early morning.

Why book with Manu Birding Lodge?

Manu Birding Lodge is a Peruvian birding lodge located next to Manu National Park, with the highest biodiversity of any protected area in the world. This birding lodge in Peru provides local, professional birding guides with visits to canopy towers, tapir and macaw clay licks.

What is the climate like?

Hot and humid in the lowlands to very cold at Abra Malaga. In a dry season tour there is the possibilty of a “Friaje”, a strong cold front moving up from the south that can bring periods of unusually cool weather and rain.

How difficult is the tour?

Moderate. There are some long journeys and early starts, but the walking is usually fairly easy. The walk up to the Polylepis is optional, those not wishing to do the hike can stay with the bus.

What is the accommodation like?

The jungle lodges are comfortable but simple; some do not have full-time electricity, but provide a generator for a few hours a day to charge batteries. The hotels in Cusco, Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu and Puerto Maldonado are Amazon Birding Standard. The hotel we use in Lima depends on flight schedules. Sometimes we use an airport hotel that is very convenient though a bit noisy, while other times we use a hotel in a better part of the city.

What to bring?

• Aside from Binoculars and photo-equipment (the important birdwatchers stuff) we advise: •A spotting scope, if you have one • Flashlight for night birding • Light day pack • Sunscreen and insect repellent • T-shirts and a long-sleeved shirt • Jeans or other cotton pants are comfortable, as well as quick-drying nylon ones • Cotton socks • Sweater, jacket or fleece for night birding • Light jacket, water resistant, or poncho • Hiking boots or sturdy shoes • Sandals for after hours • Hat and sunglasses • Plastic bags for camera, clothes, etc •Personal toiletries (shampoo, towel, etc)
