Frog Tour, Sabah, Malaysia

Frog Watching Tour in Sabah, Malaysia

This 3-day Frog Tour is a leisurely-paced safari available on request and based at Tabin Wildlife Resort, an exclusive hideaway within the vast expanse of magnificent rainforests. It is home to approximately 26 species of unique anurans – frogs & toads – including 12 species that are endemic to Borneo, one of which is exclusive to Sabah alone.

At Tabin, anurans can be found almost everywhere, from primary forests to man-made surroundings in habitats such as puddled, temporary ponds and pools, seepages, rivulets, streams, tree stumps, rotten logs, leaf litters and muddy paths. In the depths of the rainforest there are undoubtedly many unknown species still waiting to be identified and categorised.

We take you to the best spots to look for amphibians, which can range in length from one to five inches and often be cleverly camouflaged. Species you can expect to see include the Saffron-Bellied Frog, White-Lipped Frog, Harlequin Tree Frog, Translucent Frog, Giant River Toad and the unique Bornean Horned Frog. As many anurans become much more active after sunset, our exciting night walks are a must to appreciate the vibrant diversity of frog and toad activity in and around the reserve.

Our guides on this frog tour will also give you a true hands-on experience by showing you how to safely catch and handle anurans before releasing them back into the wild.

Of course, the amphibians you encounter on this frog tour are just a small fraction of the wildlife found at Tabin Wildlife Resort. There are dozens of species of lizards, skinks, geckos and snakes. There are also more than 70 mammal species, including Borneo Pygmy Elephants, Orang-utans, the rare Clouded Leopard, Bearded Pigs, Pigtail and Long-tail Macaques, Red Leaf Monkeys and Binturong. Almost 700 bird species are resident or visit Sabah, not least the magnificent Rhinoceros Hornbill.

During this frog tour you will look forward to returning to one of our charming timber lodges and enjoy the exotic sounds of the rainforest, the soothing flow of the river, the cool rhythms of waterfalls and the gentle caress of the breeze in Tabin.
