This tiny wetland immediately south of the city is simply amazing! From the end of August through to June it is home to an extremely wide variety of birds including Moustached Warbler, Little Bittern, Western Swamphen and Ortolan Bunting. In spring in particular, day lists of over 100 bird species are effortlessly achieved, including an excellent number of Mediterranean and Iberian specialities!

The capital of the region of Catalonia, Barcelona's history, culture, architecture and street life attract many visitors. For birdwatchers who are spending a few days in this vibrant city, we offer the perfect Llobregat Delta birding day out. The trip is designed to make the most of the time available and is a perfect introduction to the wildlife of this part of Spain.

"Had a marvellous half day's birding the Llobregat delta with Carles in April - just outside Barcelona and perfect for the birder vacationing with a non-birding family, as I was. Carles is a superb and highly efficient guide." - Dan Kaplan

This Catalonia birding tour takes in many of the Llobregat Delta's protected areas. During the course of the day you call in at a number of locations, including the hills of the  Garraf Massif, that will vary depending on the seasons. For instance, in breeding season there are certain places to enjoy species such as Common Rock Thrush and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, Ortolan Bunting, Thekla Lark and Little Bittern. At other times the aim will be to seek out sightings  of the many passage birds that use this patch of the Catalan coast to rest during their migration.

No matter what time of year you are visiting Barcelona, Llobregat Delta birding trips are guaranteed to provide added avian interest to your stay in Catalonia.

Catalonia Birding Tour Llobregat Delta highlights include:

  • Specialist seasonal birdwatching
  • Spring or autumn migration in the Delta
  • Mixing birding with the cultural highlights of Barcelona

Highly recommended! Carles Oliver is an expert birder, professional, personable, and exceptionally patient. He picked us up very early at our hotel in Barcelona and we explored the steppes and marshes starting with a Gryphon Vulture sunning himself in a field and culminating in sightings of Little Bustard, a life bird. A great day!

We had a wonderful morning birding around Barcelona with Carles. He knew the sites perfectly and found us many new birds on our first trip to Spain. He even waited for us outside our hotel for a long time when we overslept having arrived late the night before! Highly recommended.
