Safari adventure tour of Kinabalu National Park
This 2-day Kinabalu Park Safari Tour, Sabah is leisurely-paced and available on request. There is no better place to be introduced to the biodiversity of Borneo than at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinabalu National Park in Sabah.
Presided over by the majestic Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in Borneo, the park is divided into four distinct climatic zones that have developed into numerous habitats for wildlife, including lowland, montane and conifer forests, alpine meadows and the sheer rock faces of the summit. As you will discover on your Kinabalu tour, the park is home more than 4,500 species of flora and fauna.
Most species of Sabah's wildlife can be found in the region, from Pygmy Elephants, Orang-utans, Bornean Gibbons and Clouded Leopards to Western Tarsiers, Slow Lorises, Malayan Weasels and Small-clawed Otters. There are a huge number of endemics, including the Black Shrew, Bornean Ferret-Badger, Thomas's Pygmy Squirrels and the Kinabalu Giant Earthworm. Reptiles, amphibians and insects are equally varied – there are even 110 varieties of land snail!
Up to 326 resident and migrant bird species have been recorded in the park, not least the majestic Rhinoceros Hornbill, the national bird of Malaysia, and attract birders from all over the world to a Kinabalu tour. You have a chance to see the Mountain Serpent-Eagle, Dulit Frogmouth, Eyebrowed Jungle Flycatcher and Pale-faced Bulbul, as well as the endemic Bornean Spiderhunter.
The total number of plant species found in Kinabalu is more than Europe and the US combined, not least one of the world’s largest flowers, the vibrant red Rafflesia, whose vast blossom can grow to more than 170cm in diameter. There are more than 800 orchids, over 500 ferns and the world’s largest variety of pitcher plants.
Your Kinabalu tour takes you to the foothills of Mt Kinabalu and its treetop canopy walkways to enjoy the wildlife far above the forest floor. You'll also make stops to enjoy the rejuvenating Poring hot sulphur springs, take a dip under the the Kipungit waterfall and get treated to a delightful – but very ticklish – fish massage at the Moroli River in Luanti.
After overnighting in the picturesque town of Kundasang, with its panoramic views of Mt Kinabalu, we return to the Education Centre and Mountain Garden at Kinabalu Park HQ for a walk to explore the cool montane forest.
