Sierra de Andújar Iberian Lynx Tour
This is a 5-day Iberian Lynx Tour, Andújar in the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park in Jaén, southern Spain. This tour offers an easy-paced experience and is available either as a set departure tour or on request. On the tour you will explore this beautiful natural park, which offers some of the best wilderness landscapes in the whole Iberian Peninsula. This Natural Park protects some of the exceptional fauna and flora of the region and currently holds the best and most important population of Iberian Lynx in the peninsula.
Sierra de Andújar Natural Park is crucial in terms of conservation of the Iberian Lynx as a species, being the home of some 300 Lynx, around 35% of the total world population.
"Jose Luis, Miguel, and all associated with Iberian Lynx Land including hotel staff and local friends should be amazingly proud of how they guided our tour this last week. I entrusted their expertise to guide myself and a group of 6 clients in search of the world's most elusive cat. And they did not disappoint, with 3 different individual seen throughout our safari. Not just the Lynx but the conservation efforts behind the species, the history, the now and the future. These guys really were hands on. A TRUE eco-tourism company." - Scott Latham
The Natural Park forms part of the Sierra Morena mountain chain. This beautiful natural space in the northwest of the province of Andalucía lies between the Rivers Yeguas and Jandula. The gently rolling hills are densely wooded and boast well-preserved expanses of Mediterranean forest and scrubland. The dominant vegetation is cork and holm oak woodland and the geology is granite, quartz and slate.
Aside from the Iberian Lynx population, the area hosts a large number of hoofed mammals such as Red and Fallow Deer along with Wild Boar, Spanish Ibex and Mouflon. Small carnivores such as Otters, Genet and Wildcat also call it home, along with endangered birds such as the magnificent Spanish Imperial Eagle and Black Vulture and the shy Black Stork.
The Iberian Lynx is, of course, our main target species, as this is a specialist tour and we will be using the in depth knowledge of our company guides and also the knowhow of the people of the area who have their ears to the ground regarding the whereabouts of this elusive feline.
As a local company with local contacts and networks, we are in the best position to take you to optimum Lynx vantage points in some of the finest areas of Mediterranean woodland in the Iberian Peninsula. And we offer you the opportunity to support the conservation of this amazing wild cat as a share of Iberian Lynx Land profits goes towards the protection of the Iberian Lynx. We work with the landowners of the estates where this critically endangered feline lives, improving the habitat and increasing the population of the cats' main prey – rabbits. We collaborate in building rabbit warrens and releasing rabbits in areas of low density.
Iberian Lynx Tour, Andújar highlights include:
- A visit to one of the best wilderness landscapes in the Iberian Peninsula
- The best chance in Spain to see Iberian Lynx
- An opportunity to contribute to the protection of this important wild cat
