Guatemala Birding Tour

During this 7-day Guatemala bird watching tour you will add most-wanted endemic treasures to your birdwatching collection (upto 380 species). Visit the key spots to encounter these 55 regional endemics in the best time of the year and areas that you will be exploring during this tour are the Western and Central Highlands of Guatemala, with the Chiapas mountain chain influence and the Northern Lowlands with the Yucatan peninsula influence.

Day 1
Day 1 - Arrival

Arrival to Guatemala City around noon. We will be transferred immediately to our first birding hot spot, Los Tarrales reserve, a private nature reserve in the pacific slope foothills 3-4 hours away from the city. Dinner and overnight accommodations at the wildlife lodge of Los Tarrales.

Day 2
Day 2 - Birding in the field

The full morning will be spent in the field, transfer by car to gain some altitude to try to find the Azure-rumped Tanager and the Bar-winged Oriole and other endemics that can be found in the area, such as Emerald-chinned Hummingbird. This place has the great advantage of having good local guides that constantly monitor the property. After lunch we will do some more birding and around 5 p.m. we will be transferred to Santiago Atitlan in the Lake Atitlan area

Dinner and overnight at ‘Hotel Bambu’ at Santiago Atitlan.

Day 3
Day 3 - field hiking San Pedro Volcano or Toliman Volcano

Today is the BIG DAY, we will spend the entire day in the field hiking San Pedro Volcano or Toliman Volcano in search of the most wanted and primitive cracid in the world… The Horned Guan (it is not even considered a cracid by some scientists). It is a truly rough hike but the birding is great from the beginning of the journey until we reach the Guan´s habitat.

Departure from the Hotel at 4:00 a.m.; early morning coffee with packed breakfast and lunch, we will take a 45 minutes boat transfer from the Hotel’s dock in the village of Santiago to the village of San Pedro. After arriving to San Pedro Volcano, we will take a pick-up transfer up the volcano to the visitors center, the place where we will start our hike. After the hike we will be transferred again by boat across the stunning world class views of Lake Atitlan and its beautiful natural features. If hiking Toliman volcano the hike starts from our Hotel´s entrance.

Day 4
Day 4 - Cuchumatanes area in Huehuetenango

This day we will take it easy in the morning. We will have an early breakfast at the Hotel and will be heading to the Cuchumatanes area in Huehuetenango, the place to observe the Goldmans´s Warbler. This will be a 7 hours long transfer in the road. Around noon we will be arriving to our hotel Unicornio Azul, after check-in our local guide Esteban will be waiting for us to spend the rest of the afternoon birding a nearby national reserve “Puerta del Cielo”. Owling at night will be optional.

Day 5
Day 5 - Todos Santos Reserve

Early morning coffee and bread at the lodge´s lobby. We will be leaving at 5:00 a.m. with our packed breakfast, a one hour and a half 4×4 transfer to the Todos Santos Reserve. We will spend the whole morning looking for the Goldman´s Warbler, Ocellated Quail and the regional endemic race of Savannah sparrow, among other species. Around 11:30 we will head down back to the hotel for lunch. After checking out we will return to the city, making a strategic stop in the way to a private reserve called Chichavac. This is a second opportunity for a better look of birds like Pink-headed Warbler, Blue-throated Motmot, Hooded Grosbeak and most of the highland regional endemics. After the afternoon birding we will go back to the hotel in Guatemala City.

Day 6
Day 6 - Yaxha National Park

At 6:30 a.m. we will take an early 45 minutes flight to Flores Petén; a packed breakfast will be offered.

Around 7:30 we will be arriving at the local airport. Immediately after leaving the airport our van will be ready to take us to Yaxha National Park, it will take around 45 minutes. Our van will be ready to transfer us to Yaxha National Park, around 45 minutes drive. During the rest of the morning we will bird the forested archeological site looking for the Yucatan specialties; we will have lunch at hotel ‘El Sombrero’ near Yaxha national park. After lunch we will be transferred to Tikal National Park, (45 minutes transfer). After checking in at the Jungle Lodge we will bird at the archeological site and spend a spectacular sunset at the top of temple 4. With our flashlights on, we will head back to the Hotel.

Day 7
Day 7 - Departure day and more

Early coffee at the hotel and with a packed breakfast we will hit the trails of the archeological site before the sun rises. We will again visit temple 4 to observe de sun rise on top of the spectacular temple. After watching this spectacular moment we will head down the temple and bird the whole morning the grounds of the reserve of Tikal National Park.

Lunch at the Hotel and time to cool down, rest and pack. We will be leaving the hotel around 4:00 pm heading back to the local airport to take our afternoon flight to the city.
