Extremadura Bird Watching Trip, Spain - 1 Day

Extremadura Bird Watching Trip, Spain

Birding Trips throughout Extremadura

Private full-day Extremadura Bird Watching Trips are relaxing paced trips that are provided (subject to availability) to help those who are doing their own thing get the best of their birdwatching holidays in Extremadura.

Extremadura is quite simply one of the best birding destinations in Europe and is especially rewarding any time from late autumn to early summer. High summer has its own attractions for those particularly interested in butterflies and dragonflies. There is plenty of space in this area of Spain for nature, thanks to its low human population density and largely traditional farming practices.

There is a surprising diversity of landscapes, each with its own distinct bird communities. Extremadura is renowned for the birds of prey, with no fewer than 23 breeding species, including the highest densities in the world of Black Vulture.

Let Martin Kelsey take you out at the start of your visit to help you get a feel of the place, or perhaps towards the end to look for species that you may have missed. Whilst finding birds for yourself is always special, why not complement your trip with a guided day out or two? Local guides know the birds in the area better than anyone, where they can be found, how they behave, how to get the best views, and the best chances for photography. Just relax and let the local guide do the work for you.

The quoted price is for two people and includes a guided birding trip throughout Extremadura for the whole day as well as a picnic lunch. Please contact us for the price for a single person or for groups of three or four people. We do not mix people up and bookings are on a first-come, first-served basis. Simply let us know what species you what to focus on and we will develop a proposal for the day to meet your requirements!

Extremadura Bird Watching Trip highlights include:

  • The spectacle of thousands of wintering Common Crane, an audio-visual feast
  • The open plains surging with life: displaying Great Bustards, lark song from every direction, eagles soaring overhead
  • The colour fest of European Bee-eaters and Rollers, an impressive roll-call of classic Mediterranean birds
  • Three species of vulture and five species of eagle all possible in a day in spring in Monfragüe National Park
  • Herons and egrets, Purple Swamphens and Savi's Warblers, along with Black-winged Kite make for another very special day out

Day 1
Morning Session

Our itinerary will be based on your requests regarding species that you would like to see. Typically we might spend the morning on the plains nearby which will give us the chance to see some of the most emblematic species of the region, such as bustards and sandgrouse, with several species of birds of prey likely.

Day 2

Birding Extremadura will provide a full picnic lunch based on local products located at a spot with an amazing view and a constant welcome distraction of passing birds of prey.

Day 3
Afternoon Session

Depending on the season and your priorities, we could spend the afternoon in the spectacular Monfragüe National Park, watching vultures returning to their roosting cliffs, alongside a host of rock-loving species. In the winter we could spend a few hours on the main feeding areas for the large number of Common Crane, with attractive species such as Bluethroat present.

Wildlife species expect to see:

Depending on the place visited. On the plains we could see Great and Little Bustards, sandgrouse, a multitude of larks and passing birds of prey. In Monfragüe National Park, as well as birds of prey there will also be species such as Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Bunting and Crag Martin. If we opt to see Common Cranes in the winter, we may also find Bluethroat, waders and birds of prey like Hen Harrier and Merlin. A spring visit to woodland should yield warblers like Western Orphean, Spectacled and Subalpine, as well as Short-toed Treecreeper and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.
