Birding Trip in the Southern Ebro Delta
This 1-day Ebro Delta Southern Bird Watching Trip is a leisurely paced full-day excursion available on request. The trip will explore many of the best birding sites located in the southern section of the Ebro Delta.
The morning itinerary will commence around the Isla de Buda nature reserve. This area initially offers us some great riverside woodland that we will explore before progressing to El Violi & L'Alfacada. An observation tower offers a fantastic vista over the river mouth and surrounding lagoons, teeming with waders and wildfowl. As the morning progresses we will spend some time on this Ebro Delta bird watching adventure at the excellent Riet Vell bird observatory, perfect for those with an interest in close up bird photography, with species such as Purple Swamp-hen and Water Rail in close proximity.
"We drove 1,5h from the surroundings of Vilafranca and boy, was it worth it! We did a full day with Al, south and north side. We just saw so many species that were new to us, it was incredible. 26 new species we counted for us medium-experienced bird watchers from the Netherlands. Al was really kind and arranged everything smoothly. Would 100% recommend." - Falkert van Wier
As with all of our Ebro Delta bird watching trips, we offer our clients a choice at lunchtime. We can stop off and sample some of the delicious cuisine of the region, with mouth-watering seafood paellas being a local specialty that many are keen to sample at charming local eateries. Alternatively, we can choose to take a picnic and find suitable outdoor eating areas to bird watch as we eat.
The afternoon leg of this birdwatching day trip of the Ebro Delta will see us take in more of the famous birding sites of the region. We will be checking out the amazing salt pans of La Tancada, a location where we can observe many hundreds of Greater Flamingos feeding in the shallow waters, along with Great Egrets, Little Egrets, Purple and Grey Herons and varied terns fishing close by.
We will also be birding the magnificent sand spit of El Trabucador, which is excellent for waders, larks, gulls and terns, and will offer guaranteed sightings of the scarce Audouin's Gull.
The Ebro Delta bird watching tour concludes around the marshes of L’Encanyissada, which are home to a vast number of bird species. There are a selection of raised observation platforms where we can look out for species such as Little Bittern and listen for reedbed inhabitants such as Savi's Warbler and Penduline Tit. This habitat is patrolled constantly by multiple Marsh Harriers and also other raptors including Booted Eagles and seasonal Osprey.

- Sightings of rare wildfowl such as White-headed and Ferruginous Duck at El Violi & L'Alfacada
