Ebro Delta and Pyrenees Birdwatching Tour
This 8-day Ebro Delta and Pyrenees Birding Tour is a leisurely paced set-departure trip. You can expect to see over 200 species and enjoy both migratory birds and Spanish specialities along with incredible Pyrenean landscapes, delicious food and interesting historical and cultural experiences.
The Pyrenean mountain range is a wild corner of Europe where Lammergeiers are still common. Local communities here take steps to preserve their wildlife without impacting on their standard of living. The area provides an important corridor for migratory birds, which is what makes Pyrenees birding so exciting. Birds of prey, passerines, waterfowl and storks cross these massive mountains on their way between their breeding and overwintering areas.
"My wife and I did a tour with another couple (who we had never met before) to explore the autumn raptor migration and more. We stayed in the Pyrenees for 3 days birding and saw not only vast numbers of vultures, Honey Buzzards and eagles but had close encounters with Lammergeiers, Citril Finches and Black Woodpeckers... Good company, great birding, new friends and a few lifers. Strongly recommend!" - Prof Ciaran Meegan
This Ebro Delta and Pyrenees birding tour explores these amazing locations in late summer, which is an excellent time to enjoy large flocks of a bird of prey on their movements south: Honey Buzzards, Short-toed Snakes Eagles, Lesser Kestrels and White Storks. And we visit specific locations to try to enjoy this massive movement of birds. Many birds choose to cross the Pyrenees by the easiest way, via the low hills of coastal Catalonia.
During this season the wetlands appear full of waders, and in the largest of the marshy areas, such as Ebro Delta, it is easy to enjoy over 25 wader species in a single day. That's not to mention the excitment of large flocks of Collared Pratincoles and the mixed flocks of both Squacco and Night Herons flying south,. There are also a number of uncommon species around, including Temminck's Stint, Eurasian Dotterel and, if you're lucky, Pectoral Sandpiper.
While Catalan wetlands fill up with shorebirds, up in the Pyrenean slopes large flocks of Citril Finches and Chough (both Yellow & Red-billed) start to build up. In this season it is easy to see flocks of 30 or 40 Citril Finches together! Wallcreepers are also in the move, and local populations become more accessible.
Some areas that we explore during this Pyrenees birdwatching tour include the gorgeous "La Cerdanya" and the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. And we will have time to do some birding inside Andorra, the small Pyrenean country with strong Catalan roots.
