Upon arrival at the airport in San Jose you will be meet and transferred to your hotel. Overnight at Hotel near the city.
Following breakfast begin the journey to Sarapiqui. Check in at your lodge and walk around the lodge grounds searching for the Keel-billed Toucan, Snowy Cotinga, Sunbittern, and the endangered Great Green Macaw. Overnight in an Ecolodge.
Grab your camera for a photo session with the Great Green macaw and the Scarlet macaw in a local farm during the morning. After lunch, discover the secrets of the primary forest during a birding and nature walk with your guide. After dinner tonight is an exciting night walk to look for owls and other nocturnal wildlife. Overnight in an Ecolodge.
This morning depart the lodge for early morning birding at the nearby Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) La Selva Biological Field Station. After lunch enjoy a chance to spot birds and wildlife during a two hour boat safari on the Sarapiquí River in search for Otters, the very special Green Ibis, Kingfishers and more. Return to the lodge to settle. Overnight in an Ecolodge.
Spend the morning in a macro photography session with the famous red eyed tree frog and the blue jeans and green and black poison frogs at the lodge. After lunch, departure to Boca Tapada. The Eco-Lodge in Northern Costa Rica offers you 1250 Acres of virgin tropical rainforest with an incredible variety of fauna and flora. 350 different species of birds have been counted in the area.
Following breakfast get ready for a morning in the lodge feeders waiting for toucans, tanagers, honeycreepers, parrots and more birds as a photo session with the King vulture in the famous hide of the Lodge. in the afternoon, explore the local trails with your guides to photograph the flora and fauna of the region.
After an early breakfast, depart for the highlands. Arrive in time for lunch. Other than the Quetzal, which is a good enough reason to visit the area in itself, the presence of regional endemic species which evolved in the highest mountains of Costa Rica and Western Panama makes this site a perfect destination for bird lovers. Along with the Resplendent Quetzal, more than 170 species have been recorded in the tropical cloud forest and nearby subalpine páramo-covered peaks. This afternoon, enjoy a walk along trails in the cloud forest.
After breakfast, go birding along the trails of a local oak forest in the Reserve. A diverse mix of birds inhabits the area, including large numbers of the strikingly beautiful Resplendent Quetzal. In addition to quetzals, the region is home to a number of birds that are only found at this elevation, such as the Collared Trogon, Emerald Toucanet, Fiery-colored Tanager, Spotted Wood-Quail, Long-tailed Silky-flycatcher, Buffy Tuftedcheek, Golden-browed Chlorophonia, Elegant Euphonia, and Tufted Flycatcher. Return to the lodge for lunch. This afternoon enjoy birding along the lodge’s scenic trails, looking for Talamanca regional endemics like the White-throated Mountain Gem, Collared Redstart, Volcano Hummingbird, Black-cheeked Warbler and the new species to Costa Rica, Talamanca Hummingbird.
After breakfast transfer to the airport for your flight home.
