Day 2
Day 2

Early in the morning we'll be driving out to Los Llanos for a day in the prairies (20 mins transfer to finca La Independencia). At the traditional farm we'll enjoy the colors and light as the sun rises above the prairies, a stunning natural spectacle in the Llanos, and look for burrowing owls and ibises. We’ll receive an introduction to the farm and some lasso practice before gearing up our horses for a ride into the savannah. On horseback we'll cross small rivers, waterholes, lush savannas, palm and gallery forests keeping our eyes peeled for diverse birdlife and wildlife including different species of anteaters and monkeys. Breakfast will be provided as a fruity picnic in the saddle with the best view: that of prairies! After about half an hour of riding we'll leave our horses by a waterhole and go for a walk into denser forest to look for anteaters, hoatzins and monkeys, stalking in untouched wildlife habitats – shhhh…keep your eyes peeled! We continue our ride through the Llanos' beautiful flora for another hour looking for wildlife like anteaters, tortoises, caimans and exotic birds. Back at the farmhouse we’ll enjoy refreshing lemonade/cold beer before heading back to the hotel for a typical lunch. The afternoon is free to snooze in the hammock, have a coffee on the terrace, relax in the pool or keep exploring the garden. Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner  Overnight: Yopal - Los Ranchos Hotel

Day 3
Day 3

After breakfast we drive towards San Luis de Palenque (approx. 2 hours on paved roads in good condition). We will spend the day at Hato Matepalma and Hato Altamira, two large haciendas and declared nature reserves. Here we have the chance to sight hundreds of capybaras, white-tailed deer, spectacled caimans, tortoises and interesting birdlife including Orinoco geese and the great horned owl – Colombia’s largest owl. Shortly after entering the farm we will already see plenty of capybaras on our way to the farm’s main house. At the main house we can opt for a walk along the lagoon to look for Orinoco geese, armadillos, caimans, burrowing owls, roseate spoonbills and other birdlife. At midday a hearty lunch recharges our batteries at the farmhouse. Traversing the haciendas in a 4x4 vehicle allows us to get close to an astonishing amount of wildlife in those typical wide and open Llanos savannas that melt with the big skies. We can also opt for fishing piranhas at one of the lagoons, if we like. After a mesmerizing sunset in the prairies in the late afternoon (includes a sundowner), we return to our hotel in Yopal for dinner. Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Overnight: Yopal - Villa Lisseth Hotel
