Day 1
Colombian Andean Region

This is a region of incredible geographic contrasts and cultural richness. From snow-capped peaks, passing through moorlands, forests and wetlands, to humid subtropical forests.

In Colombia, the Andes Mountain Range is divided into three different ranges, and originate two of the most important rivers of the country, the Cauca and the Magdalena rivers.

The area is home to around 800 different species of birds, including endemics, scarce and sough-after birds where hummingbirds are one of the highlights.

The Colombian Andean region is extremely diverse and has incredible spots for nature and bird photography and observation. It is worth to mention the Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek, one of the greatest avian spectacles in the world.

More amazing birds can be found such as Andean Condor, Blue-billed Curassow, Bogotá Rail, Cauca Guan, Multicoloured Tanager and Chestnut-capped Piha.

Mammals like Olinguito, spectacled bear, Andean fox and Mountain tapir, could also be found in the Colombian Andean region, and are possible to be seen in Jaguarundi Travel nature tours.

Day 2
Colombian Amazon Region

The Amazon rainforest is considered one of the most exciting places for keen birders and nature lovers around the world. In Colombia, the Amazon Region is almost one-third of the country’s total land area and has about 750 different bird species. Although it would be impossible to find them all in a single trip, a birdlist of 300 species is possible.

This area is known to be one of the best places to search for bird species such as Amazonian Umbrellabird, White-plumed Antbird, Colombian Orange-headed Tanager, Plum-throated Cotinga and many other birds like parrots, manakins, nightjars and more.

The Amazon territory is as well, home of many charismatic mammals including the jaguar, pink river dolphin, capybara, three-toed sloth, spider monkey and giant river otter.

More jungle wildlife is hidden in the Amazon and is worth to mention the beauty and complexity of colourful invertebrates, as well as frogs and fish.

The exuberance of Colombian Amazon nature fauna and flora, is without a doubt an incredible option for Jaguarundi Travel nature explorers.

Day 3
Colombian Orinoco Region

Located in the eastern area of Colombia, the Orinoco region is probably one of the least known and visited locations. With about 800 species of birds and some rarities such as Rufous-winged Ground-Cuckoo, Spix Guan and Channel-billed Toucan, the Orinoco is worth to consider visiting.

The habitats vary from mountain slopes to grasslands, floodable savannahs and riverine plains; this area is considered the transition between the Andean region and the jungle, and is home to endemics like Brown-breasted Parakeet and Cundinamarca Antpitta.

Wetland areas are considered one of the highlights of the region, since thousands of water birds gather to feed. Nature photographers and wildlife lovers enjoy watching dozens of species of herons, egrets and ibises, accompanied by Roseate Spoonbills, Wood Storks and Jabirus.

Forests are productive for birdwatching as various antbirds, manakins, tanagers and flycatchers are present. In the savannahs and floodable areas, birds of prey are able to be seen and mammals like capybaras and the remarkable anteaters are possible to be spotted.

Day 4
Colombian Choco and Pacific Region

This region is without a doubt, one of the greatest biodiversity hotspots on Earth. The geography gathers exuberant lowland tropical rainforests and extensive coastlines, with about 650 different bird species and incredible wildlife, including humpback whales that migrate along the coast between the months of July and November.

Many colourful bird species and some endemics are included in the list of possible to see in the area. Yellow-eared Toucanet, Scarlet-and-white Tanager, Baudo Guan, Baudo Oropendola, Berlepsch’s Tinamou, Slate-throated Gnatcatcher and Sooty-capped Puffbird are some of the interesting species amongst others where the Harpy Eagle is probably the most spectacular and very desirable by the birders and naturalists.

On top of that, deep in the jungle, many other species of antbirds, antthrushes, antwrens and woodcreepers are found. Along the rivers waterbirds like cormorants, skimmers, kingfishers, herons and egrets are part of the scene.

This mega diverse area continues with the list of herps where the Colombia’s Golden Dart frog and the basilisk drive lots of interest. Although it is one of the rainiest areas in the world, the Choco region is a Mecca of biodiversity and is a must for nature travellers in Colombia. Macro photographers will be amazed by the diversity and colourful minibeasts as well as with the complexity of nature structures.

Day 5
Colombian Caribbean Region

Another incredible area full of nature and an incredible variety of habitats, where the bird list is at least around 630 species, including 20 endemic species, 18 globally threatened and at least 60 with restricted distribution.

This region is considered globally of high importance for migratory birds, since at least 120 different species cross the area using nature as their main corridor.

The tallest coastal peak on Earth is found in the Colombian Caribbean region, which is the same area where the semi-deserted Guajira peninsula and the Serranía del Perijá are located. Incredible isolated portions of nature from the coastline to the paramos and capped mountains are found in this region as well.

These mountains are also home to Colombia’s three species of big cat – the jaguar, the puma and the ocelot – though as always they are very elusive and hard to see. The whole region has been dubbed the world's capital of biodiversity, because it is home to so many unique and irreplaceable species of wild creatures.

We want our customers to enjoy the most that Colombia has to offer – its history, culture, biological richness and breathtaking landscapes. When travelling with us, regardless of the age or experience, all our itineraries are designed with comfort in mind. Everyone can discover and be thrilled by this country’s sheer beauty. Colombia, a country with many rivers and mountain ranges, has extensive highways and roads, some paved, others rugged, rutted and challenging. In some of our Journeys you might take domestic flights, travel on dirt roads and by boat. These modes of transportation allow the traveller to witness the astonishing biodiversity, the rivers, the rainforest, the mountain tops and the many climatic changes. Detailed itineraries delivered to our clients in advance outline the journey, the accommodation, travel arrangements and meal plans. While travel in Colombia can be considered an adventure, we provide the most comfortable and easiest route to a destination. We do not advertise as an adventure agency but we can and do accommodate travellers seeking new and remote areas away from cities. Sometimes on tour, you need to wake up early and travel overland to remote areas. Our staff arranges for food delivery and carries all luggage and equipment. Again, with comfort in mind, we book boutique hotels in major cities and excellent guest houses in remote locations.
