Birdwatching & Fauna Tour in Christmas Island, Australia
This leisurely-paced 7-day Christmas Island Birding Tour is available as a set departure. The annual Christmas Island Bird & Nature Week usually takes place in August and September and offers birders the opportunity to get hands-on experience of conservation work, as well as a chance to interact closely with international authorities on nature and wildlife.
Uninhabited until the late 19th century, two-thirds of the 135-square-kilometre Christmas Island has been designated a national park, while the nearby reefs are protected marine reserves. The island's position northwest of Perth and south of Java have made it an important coastal nesting area for seabirds, including Brown, Red-footed and Abbott's Boobies, Christmas Frigatebirds, the Common Noddy and Golden Bosuns. Further inland you will find the Christmas Imperial Pigeon and Christmas Thrush. In addition, more than 86 migrants have been recorded.
This Christmas Island birding trip will also give you the opportunity to observe the region's remarkable 20 species of crab, of which 13 are designated as land crabs.
On this Christmas Island birding trip, our dedicated researchers and natural history experts offer a week-long immersion in this unique ecosystem, with daily activities such as banding Goshawks, monitoring Brown Boobies and spotting and identifying the island’s more than 20 species of crab. There is also a busy programme of professional talks and presentations covering all aspects of nature and conservation.
Bird & Nature Week guests are also offered the option to extend their stay in Australia’s Indian Ocean islands and participate in the Cocos (Keeling) Island add-on, which is all-inclusive.
Christmas Island Birding Tour highlights include:
- The opportunity for birders to visit a critical nesting area in the Indian Ocean, most notably for rare and endangered seabirds
- A chance to see Christmas Island's remarkable collection of more than 20 crabs
- Participate in citizen science working alongside ornithologists as they band Goshawks, monitor Brown Boobies, and collect data on the local wildlife
- Enjoy stimulating nightly talks and presentations about conservation projects on and off the island
