After lunch we’ll come back to the Lodge where we can stay photographing hummingbirds and cotingas in the gardens and trails. One of the best places on the north coast to go birding.

Day 3
Day 3 - Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge

An awesome hotspot for wildlife observation and photography. Here we will start our day heading towards El Bambú (17 km), the experience begins here, we get into a little train used by the banana companies a couple of decades ago that cruises for 9 km through coastal plains, coconut plantations and inlets of mangroves. Once we have arrived at the visitor center we will get into a boat and journey into the water mirror trail, and the Olingos trail, through different mangrove canals. If we are lucky we can observe packs of Howler and Spider Monkeys, Tamandua anteater, Racoons, snakes, and is one of the best places in Honduras to see the elusive manatees.

Day 4
Day 4 - Cayos Cochinos

Today we are going to have a blast, birding, and snorkeling in the Caribbean Sea. Located 30 km from the coastline, we find two little islands and 13 cays that confirm the Hog Cays Archipelago. Protected Marine Reserve, part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. Here we can find different trails with easy to medium difficulty levels that offer any person refreshing walks in the tropical forest, sunbathing and relaxing in pristine white sand beaches. During late afternoon we drive to back to the Lodge where we will have dinner.

Day 5
Day 5 - Pico Bonito National Park

During the morning we'll have our breakfast while observing hummingbirds at the Lodges deck and restaurant. After this, we will start walking slowly through the main trails looking for toucans, cotingas, motmots, 16 hummingbird species, etc. There are three multi-story canopy observation towers that offer maximum wildlife observation and photography opportunities here. This tour is great for both, the avid ornithologist and the casual birder. After lunch, we'll do the Loop Trail, beginning in Tower No.1 and slowly ascending through a cacao plantation and patches of secondary forest, the trail enters Pico Bonito National Park and then loops its way back down, passing through virgin primary rain forest, which is home to important and amazing biodiversity.

Day 6
Day 6 - Cangrejal River Birding

Birding one of Honduras most scenic rivers during the morning. Its watershed is within the Nombre de Dios mountain range, and most of the Cangrejal River is inside and crosses two protected areas, Pico Bonito National Park and Nombre de Dios National Park. The highest peak is located only 25 km from the coast, so, this rugged geographic terrain creates many creeks and rivers that flow from the altitudes to the Caribbean coast in a few kilometers. This is why it is a great place for people that loves to do white water rafting with class II, III & IV rapids. There are also different trails that offer great birdwatching opportunities. After lunch, we transfer to the hotel near the Airport in San Pedro Sula.

Why book with Feathers Eco-Birding Tours?

Feathers Eco-Birding Tours is a tour operator based in Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras. We offer secure custom worry-free tours led by certified experienced guides. We cater to all your needs from the moment you arrive in Honduras, so you can have a great journey on your visit to our beautiful country.

But isn’t Honduras the most dangerous country in the world?

Umm, no. Parts of Honduras do have a high violent crime rate, it is true, at least for a country at peace: precisely the parts we will be staying away from, except when flying in and out. The rest of the country, and particularly the small towns and rural places we will be visiting and staying in, are characterized by a lack of crime targeting tourists, precisely the opposite of too many countries out there.

Do I need to know Spanish?

No, but it can never hurt! Our guides are fully bilingual.

What will the weather be like?

Tropical weather, you will need to come prepared for the country’s range of microclimates - cool, wet cloud forests, steamy hot tropical rain forests, humid coasts, hot lowland valleys. Daytime highs can reach 90f/32c in the shade but remember that the tropical sun is very hot, so it will seem warmer. Cooler nights the temperature may go as low as the 60f/14c.

What clothing and accessories to bring?

Light-weight, neutral-colored clothing that can easily be rinsed out and dried quickly is recommended for the field. Long-sleeved shirts and long pants will help protect you from insects, sunburn and thorny plants. A travel umbrella, light sweater, rain jacket, walking or hiking boots, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a bottle of water are also essential.

Recordings and Playback?

We have most species on our smartphones, and recording equipment for those calls no one can identify. Playback is permitted in most cases, but please bear in mind that the Ethics Code of the Honduran Ornithology Association governs our actions, particularly in the case of breeding species.

Any suggested websites?

We recommend familiarizing yourself with eBird, if you are not already, and visiting hotspots and regions that are on our itinerary to get a better idea of what to expect. Beyond that, the most valuable resource could be xeno-canto, where you can download vocalizations for free.
