Brown Bear Trip - 1 Day

Brown Bear Trip
90

one-day bear trip looking for and learning about the ecology of the Cantabrian Brown Bears (Ursus arctos) in the western part of the Cantabrian Mountains. Almost extinct in the '80s this isolated Brown Bear population of Southern Europe is slightly recovering. At sunrise and sunset, you will search for bears with telescopes (May-June and August-September).

Day 1
Full Day Trip

We will spend a full day following the life of the brown bear, discovering its habitat, understanding its threats and conservation problems. In short, we will get to know the Brown bear’s world and the relationship of this great carnivore with the humans that inhabit the same muntains. We will visit a cortín (stone traditional constructions built to protect the beehives from the bears) and “dream forests”. With a little luck, we will see this magnificent wild animal in its natural environment, which we will approach with maximum respect and without interfering the behavior of the animals.

We use optical material to observe from hillside to hillside, at distances between 600 and 1500 meters with the objective that the animals do not detect our presence. Our observation points will be roads, viewpoints and / or authorized dirt roads, a comfortable activity in which we will hardly walk.

I have been on many tours with many experienced guides. This was the best! Our guide was Manu, a qualified biologist and a committed ecologist whose family home is in these stunningly beautiful Somiedo mountains. Manu's expert knowledge of the area is top drawer. We had long and quality views of Bears, Wild Cat and Wallcreeper. Three very difficult species to see, as well as others such as Golden Eagle! The accommodation he recommended for us in the mountains was more than comfortable and superb value. Manu speaks excellent English, he goes the extra mile and further to make your trip memorable. Highly, highly recommended Martin Orchard-Webb

Manu, our guide, is an expert on the area, capable of spotting the tiniest of the birds miles away. Our experience couldn't be better. Apart from spotting a bear with two cubs, we enjoyed 5 incredible days amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Cantabrian mountains in Northern Spain. A must do.
