Malaysian rainforest adventure in Sabah, Borneo
This 10-day Borneo Rainforest Holiday, Sabah is leisurely-paced and available on request. To give you an even greater appreciation of the biodiversity of Malaysia, the trip encompasses a wide variety of habitats and environments, including Selingan Island, Sukau, Gomantong Cave, Danum Valley Conservation Area and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kinabalu National Park.
Selingan Island is a protected area for Green and Hawksbill Turtles and there will be an opportunity for you to swim and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. You will also visit Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre for feeding time with the Orang-utans, followed by a cruise along the Kinabatangan River at Sukau. Gomantong Cave is definitely not for the squeamish given its huge population of cockroaches and Wrinkle-lipped Bats! The cave is also a nesting ground for Swiftlets, which produce one of the key ingredients of bird's nest soup.
Borneo Rainforest Lodge is nestled in a magnificent setting alongside the Danum river that flows through Sabah’s oldest rainforest, where you can explore 43,800 hectares of pristine and undisturbed tropical flora and fauna. Here, you will stay in one of the climate-controlled Premium Deluxe chalets with a private plunge pool and a verandah overlooking the river and rainforest.
At Danum Valley you'll have the opportunity to observe some of the 120 mammal species on your Borneo rainforest holiday, including Western Tarsiers, Pygmy Elephants, Clouded Leopards, Bornean Gibbons, Red Leaf Monkeys, Macaques, Bearded Pigs, Slow Lorises, Giant Red Flying Squirrels and Sun Bears. The area also attracts more than 340 resident and migrant bird species, many endemic to Sabah, such as the Great Argus, Bornean Bristlehead, Asian Paradise Flycatcher and, of course, the magnificent Rhinoceros Hornbill, the national bird of Malaysia. There also 72 types of reptile and 56 amphibian species, as well a staggering 200 types of plant per hectare.
This Borneo rainforest holiday includes excursions to the Kadazan-Dusun Tribal Burial Cliff, a walk along the Segama River and trips to the Fairy Falls and Serpent Falls. You can enjoy a cooling dip in a natural pool or, if you are feeling adventurous, a tubing trip down the river. Night safaris are arranged in the evening to observe the nocturnal wildlife of the rainforest as it emerges from hiding.
Your Borneo rainforest holiday will culminate with a visit to Kinabalu National Park and Poring Hot Spring. Kinabalu is home more than 4,500 species of flora and fauna, all presided over by Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in Borneo.
