Bird watching in Uruguay Tour
This route runs across the Uruguayan east coast in the Maldonado’s and Rocha Departments.
Most of the points that will be visited are included inside the 200,000-hectare area forming the Los Bañados del Este Biosphere Reserve, one of the largest wetlands in the Southern Cone that includes a great diversity of environments: grasslands, lagoons, reed beds, river forest, Sierra forest, Palm tree forest and seacoast.

we will travel to the coast till Punta del Este where we will stay for 02 nights. We will go through some interesting hot-spots for birding, on route and around Punta del Este city: Punta Ballena, Punta del Chileno, Laguna del Diario, Maldonado’s Wetland area (150 kms aprox.). Accommodation in hotel in Punta del Este.
We will spend all day visiting IBA’s (Important Bird Areas) close to Punta del Este: Maldonado’s Stream Wetlands, specially east and west areas, Laguna José Ignacio and Laguna Garzón. (140 kms. Aprox.) Accommodation in hotel in Punta del Este.
We will travel to the Brazilian border to El Fortín de San Miguel, next to the El Chuy town (350 kilometres). El Fortin de San Miguel is an ancient fort that remains since the conflicts between Spaniards and Portuguese to define new frontiers. The monument is included in a small protected area that is, at the same time, part of the 200,000-hectare of Los Bañados del Este Biosphere Reserve (RAMSAR Convention). We will stop at some very interesting birding points while travelling, around Laguna Castillos and Laguna Negra areas: Bañados del Indio, Bañado de la India Muerta both are large reed-bed and wet grassland areas. Accommodation in hotel in the area.
We will do birding around the the Fort. We leave the San Miguel Fort area after Breakfast to return to Punta del Este and we will stop for birding while travelling: Balizas, La Paloma, Laguna de Rocha. We will reach Punta del Este in the evening (350 kms). Accommodation is not included.
