Birdwatching Tour Cusco including Machu Picchu
This 15-day Birding Cusco & Machu Picchu tour mixes intense birding with the picturesque sights of Machu Picchu, the flagship of the rich heritage of the Inca culture. With our Birding and Machu Picchu tour, we have planned a birding itinerary for intense birders, but that are also willing to dedicate a full day to experience the mythic Machu Picchu. Obviously, at the archaeological site, we will be birding a bit looking for Inca Wren or flocks of tanagers.
First, part of the Cusco birding tour goes to the well-known “Manu road”. Initial stop is at Wayqecha lodge, located in the middle of the elfin forest of the Manu National Park. Therefore, here we will be looking for high elevation birds like Puna Canastero, Grey-breasted Mountain-Toucan, or Red-and-white Antpitta.
After that, we spend a couple of nights at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge, famous for its high bird diversity. The garden has feeders for tanagers and hummingbirds, also, several trails go into the mountain forest. In addition, there is a large Cock-of-th-Rock lek not far from the lodge.
The last days in the eastern slope of the Andes are spent at the wonderful Villa Carmen Biological Station. This lodge is located at a lower elevation than the previous lodges, this is probably the most bird diverse area of the Manu road.
Finally, after birding 10 days on the Manu road, we go back to Cuzco for the second part of the trip: the visit to Machu Picchu and Abra Malaga. Abra Malaga is famous for its rare high elevation birds like Royal Cinclodes or White-browed Tit-spinetail.
The birdwatching in Cusco tour is perfect for people looking for unique birds, a bit of history, and of course the world-class experience of birding in Cuzco, the capitol of the Inca empire.
As with most of our tours, the first day in Lima is devoted to look for Inca Terns, Humboldt Penguins, and Peruvian Thick-knee
