Winter Wonders on a Birdwatching Tour of Northern Spain
Our 8-day Birding Aragon & Catalonia Winter Tour is a moderately paced trip available on request where you can expect to see well over 100 bird species and other wildlife in Northern Spain. The winter birdwatching itinerary for Aragon and Catalonia is available from the beginning of November through to the end of February.
"We had such a great experience birding in Spain with Al as our guide! Highly recommend this tour!" - Dennis and Trixie
We go in search of some of Spain's most sought after species, and take in some awe-inspiring birding spectacles along the way. This birding tour is a three centre experience that showcases some magnificent and diverse birding regions.
Ebro Delta: Premier Catalonia Wetland Birding Location
The first location we will be birding is the Ebro Delta, where we will spend a couple of days enjoying the best of the wetland's resident bird-life and checking out some of the winter visitors. We can expect to see vast flocks of Greater Flamingos feeding in the saline lagoons of the Delta, and congregations of Glossy Ibis, herons and egrets in the now boggy fields.
The Delta is a winter refuge for many varieties of wildfowl and wading birds, and raptors abound, with multiple Marsh Harriers, Booted Eagles and a good chance of Merlin. Rare passerines such as Moustached Warbler and Bluethroat can usually be found.
Laguna de Gallocanta: Spain's Largest Natural Lake
For the second leg of this birding Aragon and Catalonia tour we depart to Gallocanta in the dry-land plains to the south of Zaragoza. Here we will spend two days birding around the famous Laguna, which is Spain's largest natural lake. Alongside a huge wintering population of Common Cranes (which can number up to 60,000 birds during peak passage times of early November and late February!), we can also target Great and Little Bustard and enjoy sightings of raptors such as Hen Harrier and Golden Eagle. This region offers genuine possibilities for scarcities such as Pallid Harrier, Black-winged Kite and Dupont's Lark.
Sierra de Guara: Wallcreeper & Lammergeier Winter Haven
For the final leg in birding Aragon, we depart for Alquezar in the pre-Pyrenean region of Sierra de Guara. Dubbed 'the land of the Lammergeier', we will be searching for this rarest of vultures, along with another popular birding target, the beautiful but elusive Wallcreeper. This bird descends from the high Pyrenees to overwinter at lower altitudes on the cliffs and canyons of the Guara. And there are plenty of other species to be found in this mountainous zone, including the likes of Blue Rock Thrush, Dartford Warbler and Citril Finch.
This week-long Aragon and Catalonia birdwatching tour includes private airport transfers from Barcelona International Airport and accommodation throughout the tour at carefully selected guest houses situated in the different birding regions.
