WalkwithJith arranged an exceptional trip to Sri Lanka in Feb 2018. It was a private birding and cultural tour and all the arrangements were excellent. Jith was very receptive to any suggestions and changes and made the whole process very easy. Our guide, Upali, was excellent and knew all the top spots to find the endemics. Overall a fantastic tour and I would highly recommend WalkwithJith.

We have been on 3 trips with Walkwithjith March 2008;Feb 2013 and March 2018. We enjoyed the experience hugely, not only for the birding and general wildlife, but to see and understand the culture of the island. The personal touch and friendship were a prime feature which makes us return. The guides were highly informed and determined for us to see and understand the wildlife . We thoroughly recommend the experience.

Wonderful tour of a number of key sites, seeing all endemics in about a week, Jith tours were excellent with all arrangements, and particularly the guide being highly competent, very affable and flexible. Highly recommend this Company and Birding in Sri Lanka. They are very flexible on arrangements and making changes on the ground if feasible. Do liaise with Jith on requirements, level of accommodation and take into account the slow travel times between locations. Overall excellent and great value.

Myself and an American friend booked a private tour. Jith personally collected us from the airport and drove us to a hotel near the airport. The next morning he introduced us to our guide Thilina. The focus of the tour was the endemics, migrants and other birds from the south of the sub-continent. We saw all the endemic birds well plus over 200 other species. Additionally we saw good numbers of mammals including some great leopard sighting. Thilina was an excellent guide and the tour was very well organised. Nothing was too much trouble for him and with his network of local contacts he was always able to locate even the most difficult species. Mostly we traveled in a comfortable 8 seater vehicle although at some sites we transferred to a 4WD vehicle. Then areas we visited included Kitulgala, Sigiriya, Unwatta, Nuwara, Horton, Yale, Udawala, Bundala and Sinharaja. If you're thinking of visiting Sri Lanka I would recommend 'Walk with Jith' - if you do ask for Thilina ! The cost of the tour was remarkably good value given that we had just a group of 2. Before the tour Jith was excellent in his response to my enquiries and requests. Often an email would arrive back the same day.

The tour was organized for two friends of mine from US. The guide was extremely knowledgeable about wildlife and especially birds. He had good hunch for the need of the guests. Courses service. He knew locations very well. Found us good resting and dining places. Safe driving. Will always be a pleasure to travel and wildlife with him.

What is the best time to do a birding trip in Sri Lanka?

As a tropical country, it is very fair to say that Sri Lanka does not have any seasonal changes like in Europe. You can watch resident birds and endemic birds throughout the year. We have two different monsoon rains. But it is not a big hindrance to watch birds. From October winter migrant birds start coming to Sri Lanka. These winter migrants can be seen until end of March. If you are concerned with both resident and migrant birds to Sri Lanka, the best time to visit is November to April.

What are the most important birding sites to visit in a birding tour in Sri Lanka?

If your main focus is to watch all 33 endemics, here are my top birding sites for endemic birds in Sri Lanka: 1. Horton Plains 2. Kitulgala Rain Forest 3. Nuwara Eliya 4. Sinharaja Rain Forest 5. Yala National Park Other than the sites listed above, there are many good birding sites all over Sri Lanka that would suffice a general bird watching tour. If you are coming to see a specific non-endemic bird you may have missed in a previous tour, you may need to go to a certain site in Sri Lanka not in the list for endemic birds. Here is my most visited or famous birding sites list for a general birding tour: 1. Anawilundawa Ramsar Wetland 2. Bundala Ramsar Wetland and National Park 3. Chundikullam Bird Sanctuary 4. Jaffa cost way and lagoon areas 5. Kaudulla National Park 6. Kumana National Park (East of Yala) 7. Mannar area 8. Minneriya National Park 9. Sigiriya Forest Reserve 10. Surrey Bird Sanctuary 11. Udawatta Kele Forest Reserve

How can I choose a good birding guide in Sri Lanka?

Your bird watching guide plays a key role in your birding trip in Sri Lanka. He should know about all major birding sites and some secret places he has found by herself to see special birds. He should be very familiar with habitats. He should be good at recognizing bird calls and is good at locating the source of the call. He should be patience and friendly with his guests. Past trip reports and guest’s volunteer feedbacks are most important fact to select a right company or a guide. There are very few professional and expert birding guides in Sri Lanka with good knowledge, skills and experience. Most of them work for a few tour companies. When you choose a company for your birding trip you have to carefully look into the expertise and track record of the tour guide. Traveler’s Independent trip reports or reviews are one of a bestways to assess the birding guides of a tour company or freelance guides. Tour feedbacks and guests' comments will also give an idea of the guides and tour operators. Read www.srilankabirdingtripreports.com for independent tour reports of bird watching tours organized by Walk With Jith tours. Walk With Jith's tour feedbacks and guest comments will also give you an idea about their birding tours. Walk With Jith's birding tour guide team is something that you should take a look at if you are seeking a specialized, experienced birding tour guide.
