Amazon Birding in Southeastern Peru Tour

Southeastern Peru Amazon Birding Tour

This is a 15-day Amazon birding tour to Southeastern Peru, taking in what has to be the best leisurely birding experience possible in the neotropics. When birdwatching in the Amazonian lowlands you have the chance to see and hear more than 1,000 bird species, split between the Manu and the Tambopata National Park areas.

After flying from Lima to Puerto Maldonado, this Amazon birding tour involves a boat trip up the Río Madre de Dios to Los Amigos Biological Station (also known as CICRA) in the Amazonian lowlands. The fabulous network of trails at Los Amigos gives access to various different kinds of habitats such as terra firme and varzea forests, palm swamps and bamboo patches. The diversity of wildlife in this area is just astonishing, whether it be birds, monkeys, frogs or snakes. Los Amigos is probably the best area in Peru for raptors and monkeys.

Continuing on this birding tour in the Amazon, guests return to Puerto Maldonado to take another boat to the Tambopata National Reserve. Inside the reserve, we stay at three different lodges: Posada Amazonas, Tambopata Research Center and Refugio Amazonas. Most time will be spent at the Tambopata Research Center where the bird diversity is just amazing. We will visit the canopy tower, the macaw clay lick (the largest macaw clay lick known in Peru) and oxbow lakes with Giant River Otters and Caimans. Also, we will have great chances to see Anacondas, Jaguars and Tapirs on this Amazon birding trip.

The tour ends in the city of Puerto Maldonado for a flight back to Lima. As a bonus to the main Amazon birding tour, we include a day of birding around Lima. We don’t want you to miss sightings of Humboldt Penguins, Peruvian Thick-knee and Inca Terns!
