Amazon Bird Watching Tour, Colombia
2000

Colombia Birding Tour in Mitú-Vaupés, Amazon region.

This is a 8-day Amazon bird watching tour to the Colombian Amazon Region of Mitú-Vaupés.

Once we fly to the Amazon region we will be enjoying bird species restricted to its unique ecosystems present in this part of the Colombian Amazon: White sand, Varsea, and Terra firme forests; small tepuyes and black rivers. All of them are plenty of bird elements from those classic ones from Amazonia to Orinoquia and Guyanas region, so, an ample array of bird species are enjoyed in just one enrich birding tour.

In the south-east area of Colombia, in the middle of the Amazon jungle rests Mitú, which means Curassow in the local language; the municipality is the capital of the Vaupés department and it’s bathed by Vaupés River waters, this region has Brazil as its neighbour to the east.

This is an indigenous territory, holding around 27 ethnic groups, its native people still use traditional agricultural methods is known as “Chagras” or Conucos, which results in the conservation of the jungle.

Petroglyphs depicting The Ancestral Groups are found on the rocks around some areas we visit and Malocas are the hub of their celebrations, as one example is the one in Urania Community which we visit.

The Guiana rocky shield makes its presence by small Tepuyes, inviting you to contemplate impeccable views of the green carpet: The jungle at its highest expression! What about a sunset over there? Any description will not honour it properly.

Some Guiana birds extend its distribution over this land, creating a combination of Amazonian and Guiana avifauna; this feature turns it into a very valuable area since it integrates easy access, suitable trails, variety of ecosystems and, of course, more diverse bird specialities compared with other countries of the Guiana region.

Tour highlights include

  • Meet bird species restricted to only White-sand, and Varzea forest and Tepuyes.
  • An ample mixture of birds from Amazonia, Guyana and Orinoquia regions.
  • Opportunity to experience authentic Amazon bird watching with a local guide from the Cubeo and Tucano ethnic groups based in Mitú.
  • Birding the Amazone with indigenous communities and some of their sacred places.
  • Know how indigenous people refer to and name birds that dwell their territories and the myths behind them.
  • Taste typical food and fruits from the Amazonia region.
