Wildebeest
Watch the Serengeti migration, the most spectacular land migration of wildlife in the world which occurs in the Serengeti all year round. It is an annual movement for wildebeest in search of food and water. This is the heart and soul of the Serengeti with a volume that is large enough to support a healthy population of predators.
Lion
There are over 3,000 lions in the Serengeti living in communal prides for hunting and breeding. Super-prides (greater than 24 individuals) are not infrequent. The world’s longest-running research project (Serengeti Lion Project) has been documenting and tracking lions since 1950. Lions are found in all parks and reserves in Tanzania except Arusha National Park.
Cheetah
Cheetah are usually easily seen in Tanzania (unlike in southern African countries) and the Serengeti Cheetah Watch tracks individuals, their genealogy and their movements.
Leopard
Leopards are more abundant than they appear due to their shy and solitary nature, also preferring to hunt at night. Although immensely strong (they can carry their own weight in prey up a tree), they are shy to defend their kill with other predators. Leopard numbers are unknown because the government does not allow them to be collared (weight of the collar can interfere with hunting) but they are considered to be one of the most adaptive cats in the world.
Elephant
Census studies and conservationists fear the decline of the Elephant populations as they are hunted for their ivory tusks illegally. However elephants are still easily seen in northern Tanzania. Tarangire National Park hosts a migration of elephants during the dry season months of June-mid-November with over 6,000 individuals in the park. Although cow/calf herds are rarely seen on the Crater floor (not enough food or shade for calves), the older bull Elephants are usually easily seen very close to the vehicles.
Black Rhino
Black rhino are highly endangered but are seen in Ngorongoro Crater and in the Serengeti (both central and northern areas of Serengeti). They are part of the original Big Five (the five most desired animals by hunters) but are not allowed to be hunted in Tanzania. The black rhino is a browser (hence its pointed mouth) while the white rhino (not in Tanzania) is a grazer so they have a wide mouth. The calves of black rhino follow behind their mothers making them more susceptible to predators while the white rhino carefully walk behind their calf to better protect from predation.
Zebra
Zebra herds have remained very constant at approximately 250,000 individuals. Zebra move with the wildebeest and they share a symbiotic relationship. Zebra benefit from the extraordinary ability for wildebeest to smell upcoming rain and wildebeest benefit from the zebra’s heightened sense of sight in spotting predators hiding in the grasses.
Caracal
A beautiful but rarer predator, the Caracal has ear tufts to increase their skill in hunting prey. Often called the “desert lynx”, the Caracal hunts rodents and small birds which they jump up into the sky to catch. The tufts help to capture sound waves and pinpoint prey. The Caracal is the logo for Unique Safaris’ commitment to finding interesting wildlife!
Raptors and Vultures
Even the most avid of wildlife enthusiasts are enthralled by the raptors and vultures found in Tanzania. The diversity of eagles, hawks, falcons and owls are mesmerizing and the possibility of finding raptors with kills is exciting. Although vultures do not kill their own food, large numbers of vultures indicate a kill is nearby and they are in waiting for their turn. There is a hierarchy within the vulture species based on their strength and ability to begin feeding on carrion.

As a wholly Tanzanian owned and operated safari and Tanzania tour company, Unique Safaris has a strong commitment to helping communities benefit from tourism.

This extends beyond just hiring Tanzanians in all operational positions. The team at Unique Safaris seeks NGO projects that are successful and have integrity.  Currently, we help to support two significant projects in Tanzania, focusing on health care delivery and education. We carefully selected the following organizations based on their ability to measure their success and their transparency in donations and audits.

We traveled in Tanzania's Tarangire and Serengeti with Unique Safaris in October 2016. The itinerary was personalized and perfect. The camps were beautiful, and we especially enjoyed getting to know the wonderful staff and all who supported us on our journey. Our guides were phenomenal and presented us with experiences and wildlife viewings that other travelers did not encounter. All the while, they also kindly shared their knowledge and culture, and made it so much fun.

We've been on three other safaris and the one in Tanzania through Unique Safaris was absolutely phenomenal! I cant think how it could have been better. They took care of us from the moment we stepped off the airplane until we had to (sadly) say good-bye. Our accommodations, food, drinks, etc., were all really, really good. The staff was amazing and made us feel very welcome. But what really made the safari the best was our guide. He was THE best and we saw literally everything we wanted to see! He was very patient with us (we would stop a long time for photos) and knew where to go, and when to go. He was articulate and very knowledgeable about all the animals and the Serengeti - he answered all of our questions - and I ask a lot of questions! Honestly, I would not hesitate to recommend Unique Safaris to anyone - it really was the experience of a lifetime (or maybe will be again - I want to go back!)

When visiting Tanzania I would not use any other company other than Unique Safaris - and I am now on my fourth trip with them. My confidence in their ability to provide faultless organisation, amazing camps in amazingly secluded environments, great food, exceptionally friendly staff and, above all, a gem of a guide/driver. His knowledge of wildlife and the environment in which they live; his being able to anticipate their next move and positioning the vehicle with this in mind, enabling marvellous photographic opportunities, and his incredible patience and understanding could not be over-rated. A great driver with extraordinary eyesight added to his attributes but most importantly I feel safe and confident in his ability to react to any situation that may arise. I went solo on my last trip but did I feel lonely at any time....no, because I was met and travelled for the next 10 days with a friend. Thank you Unique for three unique safaris and I am so looking forward to my fourth this month.

We experienced the trip of a live time with Unique Safaris. They arranged a 10 day itinerary with us that included the best guides, great tented camps and staff, unbelievable wildlife, and a chance to visit the School of St. Judes. Of the many trips we have taken, this one made the biggest impact on us. And, we are already planning on a return to Tanzania. Thank you to all the staff at Unique!

Just returned from a safari to Tanzania-Tarangire National Park, Ngorangora Crater, & the Serengeti. Had the most amazing experience. Our guide, Ellison was the best! He was able to all of the best spots so that we were able to see all of the Big 5 and so many more. He is also knowledgeable for the large variety of birds which we were thrilled to see. Our accommodations were very nice with great locations. I would highly recommend Unique Safari from the assistance with organizing the trip with Meg to the final drop off by Mathis. Thanks for the wonderful experience.

Cannot think of what we did NOT see on our first trip. Had such a good time that we are going back a second time with a group we have organized. Unique has been great to work with, and once on safari, they are even better. The guides are wonderful, always know just how and where to approach animals for best viewing and best light and angles for photographers. Highly recommended.
