The SELVA Foundation is a Colombian non-profit, non-governmental organisation founded in September 2009. Their mission is to undertake rigorous scientific research programs that facilitate the design, promotion, and implementation of conservation actions for the benefit of the biodiversity and people of the Neotropics. Manakin Nature Tours designed an extraordinary tour especially for me. While my husband is the avid birder I wanted to experience more of Colombian culture, history and arts in addition to the wonderful natural experience Manakin traditionally provides. It was fabulous. My tour guide Camila is a charming, warm and intelligent person. We had great discussions about languages and history. National Parks. Museums. Historic sites. Botanical Gardens. Nature preserves. Orchids. The organic farm and homestay. Hummingbirds. Local handicrafts. That hot air balloon ride over the coffee plantations. Tasting local foods in each region we visited. The drivers were great and added so much more to my Colombian experience. (Giovanni was an excellent birder.) I appreciate the care that Manakin put into my visit and applaud their efforts on a local level to encourage good conservation practices by adding many special places on the itinerary that support ecotourism.

With our excellent bird guide Cristian Daza we travelled 23 days from Mitu in the Amazon Rainforest to the Andes, Choco, Magdalena & Cauca Valley, Atlantic Coast and Santa Marta Mountains. Thanks to Cristians very good knowledge of all the habitats we not only spotted almost 700 bird species, but also experienced a very diverse nature spectacle. The tour was perfectly organized by Luis Eduardo Uruena. It included comfortable lodges, great Colombian food and good drivers who even assisted in the birding. We will certainly consider Manakin Nature Tours for organizing future tours for us to the Neotropics.

Our bird guide, Hernan Arias is an excellent guide and with his expertise we saw 462 bird species and innumerable insect, reptile and mammal species. Hernan is also an extremely pleasant, patient and knowledgeable person with whom it is a pleasure to be with. The accommodation that Manakin Nature Tours arranged was simple but comfortable and always located within easy reach of the birding areas. The car Manakin Nature Tours supplied was comfortable and our driver, Ronald, was an expert, safe and competent driver. We had a wonderful time in Colombia due to Hernan Arias spotting the many species and ensuring our trip went smoothly. Many thanks to Luis Eduardo Uruena of Manakin Nature Tours for arranging our super holiday.
