Southern Africa Birdwatching and Wildlife Safaris
Lawson’s Birding, Wildlife and Custom Safaris opened its doors way back in 1990 and is currently the original South Africa birding company, celebrating 30 years of operations in September 2020. Back then there were very few resources available to the birder, such as the where-to-find books, Whatsapp Groups, Facebook pages etc; it was very different to how its done today, with all the websites, apps and other resources that are available. Many of the routes, stakeouts, and hotspots that Lawson’s still use were first pioneered by our own Peter Lawson over nearly thirty years ago.
Since those early years, Lawson’s has grown in stature and scope, even expanding into East Africa, and though Peter retired in 2010 we still retain that family business ethos, with Peter’s daughter Mavourneen Pearce as the brains behind the operation. Mavourneen is assisted by her business partner Leon Marais, who also leads many of the Lawson’s Africa wildlife safaris tours. They are in turn are assisted by a small and able team, comprising Sue Ricketts in reservations, Nadine Jones as handler of the set-departures, and Kristy Dupper as general admin.
Lawson’s has also established relationships with a number of capable and trusted freelance guides across the country, whom we use for many of our regional South Africa wildlife safaris.
Africa wildlife safaris and birding tours include set-departures catering to birders and wildlife enthusiasts; custom safaris set up specifically for couples, families and small groups; and ground operations for a number of reputable tour operators from the UK, USA, Australia, and Asia. Lawson’s pride themselves on a superb organisation, attention to detail and excellent birding and wildlife guides (after all it’s the guide who shapes the overall experience!). All in all, we strive to create fun, rewarding and memorable birding, wildlife and photographic safaris – that’s the bottom line.
Lawson’s is registered tour operator in South Africa; a SATSA (South African Tourism Services Association) Bonded member; and a member of the SATIB24 Crisis Call insurance scheme.
During the COVID-19 global lockdown, Leon Marais shares his present #VirtualBirding experience in April 2020.
Lawson’s Birding and Wildlife Tours are corporate donors to the Endangered Wildlife Trust (https://www.ewt.org.za/), African Bird Club (https://www.africanbirdclub.org/) and are a certified birder-friendly tour operator by Bird Life South Africa (https://www.birdlife.org.za/) .
