Bearded Vulture
Our Northern Spain Birding Tour takes you to one of the best places in the world to see the emblematic Bearded Vulture. Its huge wingspan (nearly 3m) casts an unmistakable shadow on the landscape. Sometimes this is the first thing we spot from the hide. We are so close you can even see the red scleral ring around the eye.
Golden Eagle
Our hide visit, a highlight on our Northern Spain Birding Tour, allows for stunning views of this majestic bird. Named after the pale golden plumage on the back of the head in the most part it is a dark chocolate brown with white patches under the wing and on the tail.
Wallcreeper
Known by many pseudonyms, such as the Butterfly Bird or locally as Pintarpared or Wallpainter, this small passerine bird is about the size of a Nuthatch, yet weighs no more than a Great Tit. Deep crimson wings flash and flutter as it negotiates the vertical rockfaces we visit on our Northern Spain Birding Tour.
Firecrest
On our Northern Spain Birding Tour, we visit the local pine forests to find this Kinglet. Distinguished from the Goldcrest by the black and white stripe above the eye, it can be quite difficult to identify. The chestnut coloured thumbprint on the shoulder is a good way to confirm it is a Firecrest.
Crested Tit
Both the common name and scientific name, Lophophanus cristatus, are derived from the distinctive chequered black and white crest which stands erect and quite pointed in the adult. This makes it much easier to spot in the red pine forests which we visit on our Northern Spain Birding Tour.
Black Woodpecker
We visit the Ordesa National Park on our Northern Spain Birding Tour to get a glimpse of this striking bird. It is the largest of the European woodpeckers. Both male and female are all black, the male having a large red crown covering most of the head, whilst on the female it is more of a thin red flash.
Common Crane
We time our Northern Spain Birding Tour to see between 20.000 and 60,000 Common Cranes gathering on their annual migration. The adult bird has slate grey plumage; the throat, nape and sides of the face are black. A white stripe runs from the eye down each side of the neck to the upper back. The striking red crown is actually a bare patch of skin.
Great Bustard
On our Northern Spain Birding Tour, we often see these birds in a group, known as a ‘drove'. Males and females only come together to mate. Similar in shape to a goose (but on stilts, with a much straighter neck), they are one of the heaviest flying birds in the world.
Marsh Harrier
Gallocanta, a stop-over on our Northern Spain Birding Tour, is a great place to see this bird, the largest of all the harriers. Probably the most noticeable characteristic is the absence of white on the rump and the long tail.
Black-bellied Sandgrouse
The steppe plains we visit on our Northern Spain Birding Tour are the ideal habitat for this species. The male has an orange throat with black half-band, pale salmon breast and defined black border. Both male and female have a black belly but the female is less showy; buff/beige with speckled breast, and less defined black bands.

All our tours include a day visiting an area that supports more Bearded Vultures than any other place in Europe. The increasing population in our area is a direct result of the work carried out by the Fundación Para la Conservación del Quebrantahuesos’ (FCQ). This is an NGO created in 1995 to re-establish the population of Bearded Vultures across the Pyrenees. During our day in the mountains we talk about the bird, its unique feeding habits, mating cycle, how to spot a Bearded Vulture and its persecution. Education is an important element in the conservation of this magnificent bird.

In addition to education, we also make an annual donation to FCQ. Throughout the year our guests are encouraged to buy merchandise relating to our business and the Bearded Vulture itself. We make no profit on these sales and hand all monies received (including donations) to the FCQ.  Each year we raise hundreds of Euros for this conservation project.

Casa Allue is located in a beautiful and peaceful valley; instead of traffic, you will sleep and wake to the gentle sound of cowbells. The mansion has been meticulously refurbished to meet strict environmental guidelines. Our room was spacious and inviting. Lucy, Simon, and Sofi are wonderful hosts who go out of their way to make you feel at ease. Even Hera the dog treats you as if you were a member of the family! Food for the great home-cooked meals is gathered locally, if possible, from their own garden and farm. They, along with the wonderful expert local guides they hire for the vacation, are passionate about the area and its environment, and they want to see it preserved. During our vacation I learned a lot on the holiday. It included so many memorable moments and visited different local habitats to show to their best the local flowers, birds, animals, butterflies, moths and the geology and history of the area. So much beauty! All meals, drinks and transport were included in the holiday and I feel it was excellent value for money.

Discover the wild and rugged beauty of Aragon in the Spanish Pyrenees under the skilled direction and loving hospitality of Lucy and Simon at Aragon Active for a really memorable experience. The lodging was fantastic, and the freshly prepared meal was outstanding. You won't have to worry about anything with the all-inclusive package, and the small group sizes are ideal for this type of vacation. We went orchid hunting with a plant expert, while Lucy detailed the geological development of the mountains, especially the Monte Perdido limestone massif. We heard nightingales, saw Wryneck, Woodcut Shrike, and Rock Thrushes, among many other species. It was a haven for animals. The day and night spent with local entomologist Enrique was a highlight. We spotted a variety of butterflies throughout the day and put up a moth net at night, collecting an incredible amount of moths that we inspected the next morning. It was sheer delight! A private vulture viewing with 80 Griffin vultures, 2 Egyptian Vultures, and 9 Lammergeiers was another highlight. They circled high above the mountains, their sharp eyes scouring the ground below for the next meal. It was an amazing sight to see. We went skinny diving in the turquoise waters of Janovas, a community abandoned for a dam that was never completed. In Ordesa National Park, Alberto, a mountain guide, brought us over the snowline. We glimpsed a Rock Creeper, saw U-shaped valleys, waterfalls, tree-lined gorges, marmots and chamois grazing. Magic

I had a terrific experience with Aragon Active on a group 'Birds of Northern Spain' excursion. The views are breathtaking. Observing massive flocks of griffon vultures from the mountain conceals was an incredible pleasure. They were incredible, and I'll never forget them. We also saw some lovely lammergeiers. We were treated to skies filled with cranes flying over us, calling to each other, and we even saw great bustards when we moved base to a lake in the southern part of Aragon. The home-cooked food was excellent in both locations. As a vegetarian, I'm used to improvising when on vacation, but the food here was something I looked forward to every day! Simon and Lucy are full of knowledge about the local area, which they clearly care deeply for. They are lovely hosts and eager to make sure everyone has a good time. If you like mountains, good food and big birds then this is the place for you.

After two wonderful vacations with Simon and Lucy in the last two years in May and June with my wife, I decided to take my dear buddy Keith on a birding trip in February. Simon greeted us at Zaragoza Airport and drove us north with four other passengers. The panorama as you reach the Pyrenees' foothills is breathtaking, but there isn't much snow this time, just beautiful skies. For the time of year, this is unusual. The first highlight of this short break was driving into the mountains and spending time in a hide watching magnificent Lammergeiers and numerous Griffon Vultures. This was a fantastic experience, and despite being a novice photographer, I was able to get some excellent images. There was free time to walk in Albella's peaceful and beautiful surroundings, with bonus sightings of Roe Deer and rare birds like Hawfinch and Woodlark. We spent a day searching for the rare Wallcreeper with the help of a guide. No joy, but it was discovered the next day. A journey south of Zaragoza to a lake where 30,000 cranes were spending the winter was the second main portion of the tour. The sight and sound of these birds was very breathtaking. There were many additional bird species to view, with the Short-Eared Owls and Great Bustards being my favorites. I admire Simon and Lucy's approach to developing their vacation rental property, with excellent food and hospitality along with their delightful daughters Penny and Sofi. If you enjoy nature, then i highly recommend this and indeed any other holiday Aragon Active have to offer.
