Responsible Kenyan Tours

Oluokos Expeditions is a family owned local social enterprise that is based in Ndisi village, Siaya, Kenya.

Oluokos Expeditions is committed to responsible travel and true sustainability in the Yala Valley Sanctuary and its surrounding environment. This was a commitment formed when the company was established, and today, in the face of a multitude of threats to the environment, their culture and the tourism industry their commitment is stronger than ever.

Oluokos Expeditions offer two wildlife adventures, Nature’s Last Wonder Tour and an Absolute Birding Tour, or two alternative tours which embrace the local culture while familiarising yourself with the native flora and fauna.

Over the past two years Oluokos Expeditions have honed their responsible travel philosophy and the initiatives they have in the field are continually being assessed and improved to ensure that they minimise their impact and where possible leave behind a positive impression.

Oluokos Expeditions were moved by the level of isolation, remoteness and virgin nature in the Yala Valley and we decided to be the part of the solution towards the persisting problems. The reduction of poverty and the development of rural communities in the Yala Valley Sanctuary of Western Kenya region and at the same time contribute to the preservation of the Luo culture and the unrivaled nature of this countryside remains to be one of their major goals.

Oluokos Expeditions Conservation

At Oluokos Expeditions their responsible expeditions’ policy binds them to genuine sustainability in all aspects of their business planning and operations.

Their expeditions are managed in a manner where the natural and cultural values of the host communities are undiminished in the long term. Where possible, they engage in partnerships with local environmental groups and/or land managers to actively campaign for conservation or to promote environmental protection and/or rehabilitation.

Oluokos Expeditions believe that travel should be as rewarding for the host communities as it is for the traveller. Their sole aim is to maximise the benefits of tourism for host communities. This includes training and employment of local staff, using local suppliers and assisting in the development of sustainable local businesses.

Oluokos Expeditions actively minimise the negative effects that tourism can have by ensuring that tourism does not divert resources away from local communities or drive up prices on local resources.

They strive to educate their travelers about the destinations and their local cultures as well as providing guidelines on appropriate behaviour to minimize impact.
