Africa Wildlife Safaris
Lawson’s Birding, Wildlife and Custom Safaris opened its doors in 1990, and as such is the original South Africa birding company. Back then there were very few resources available to the birder, such as the where-to-find books, websites and apps available today, and many of the routes, stakeouts and hotspots Lawson’s still use were first pioneered by Peter Lawson over twenty five years ago.
Since those early years, Lawson’s has grown in stature and scope, and even though Peter retired in 2010, the company still retains that family business ethos, with his daughter Mavourneen Pearce as the brains behind the operation, assisted by her business partner Leon Marais, who also leads many of the Africa wildlife safaris tours. They are in turn assisted by a small and able team, comprising Sue Ricketts in reservations, Lyndell Luyt as Mavourneen’s able assistant and handler of the set-departures, Nadine Strydom as fleet manager, and John Davies as their Central and East African specialist and able tour leader.
Lawson’s has also established relationships with a number of capable and trusted freelance guides across the country, whom they use for many of their regional South Africa wildlife safaris.
Africa wildlife safaris and birding tours include set-departures, custom safaris and ground operations for a number of reputable tour operators from the UK, USA, Australia and Asia. Lawson’s pride themselves on superb organisation, attention to detail and excellent guides. All in all they strive to create fun, rewarding and memorable birding, wildlife and photographic safaris – that’s the bottom line.

Where does one start in terms of ‘other wildlife’ in Africa?
South Africa alone has a vast treasure trove of wildlife and natural history to be seen and experienced. Encounters with big game species such as Elephant, Lion, Leopard, African Buffalo and Rhinoceros are always a highlight, and, on a safari, the moments between sightings of these species are usually filled with a plethora of birds, other mammals, reptiles, trees, plant and all the ‘little’ things that make the ecosystem tick over. Big critters notwithstanding, South Africa is rated as one of the top three most biologically diverse countries on the planet, so there’s virtually no limit to the natural history one can see and experience in South Africa. Add in the other countries in the sub-region, and you have a lifetime’s worth of wildlife-based experiences on offer.
Lawson’s Birding and Wildlife Tours does not have any conservation news at present to share.
