Far South Expeditions is a small and local tour business, based in Patagonia, with offices located at Punta Arenas, Chile’s most southerly city. The company was founded by Enrique Couve and Claudio F. Vidal, two of Chile’s foremost naturalists. Since 1997, they specialise in offering birding, wildlife and nature expeditions for small groups and individuals. Far South Expeditions has an extensive nature trip portfolio with an assortment of trips focusing on birding, wildlife and nature photography. The destinations they offer include a range of options in Patagonia, Chile, Argentina and Antarctica. In addition, new destinations for 2018 include Peru, Guatemala and the remote islands of the South Atlantic.
With over 15 years of experience, Far South Expeditions are pioneers in carrying out puma-tracking trips in Patagonia’s Torres del Paine. They also organize nature photo tours and photography workshops in Patagonia, the Atacama Desert, Perito Moreno Glacier and Tierra del Fuego.
Far South Expeditions offer small group travel and are privileged to work with the guidance of skilled resident naturalists and local tour guides.
The Far South Expeditions trips visit contrasting and beautiful locations from the Atacama Desert and the Altiplano in the Northern Andes, to the enigmatic Easter Island in the middle of the Pacific, as well as the impressive fjörds, mountains and glaciers of Patagonia, Torres del Paine and Tierra del Fuego, and the stunning beauty of Antarctica.
With a diverse calendar for 2018 and 2019, Far South Expeditions combine the best the region has to offer for travellers who are interested in both the natural and cultural world. Chile’s spans for more than 4,000 km along the western edge of South America, comprising of tropical deserts, lush rainforests, massive glaciers, fjords and tundra habitats in the south. The landscapes are simply staggering and there is also a large network of national parks and nature reserves.
Far South Expeditions recommend travelers combine birding tours alongside opportunities to observe the many rich aspects of Chile’s natural history. The coastal Atacama Desert experiences a massive and striking blooming after “unusual” winter rains. The Atacama is also one of the hotspot for cacti diversity, including the species-rich genus Copiapoa. Several parks in the Lake District host sensational and well-preserved natural stands of the familiar Chilean Monkey Puzzle (Araucaria araucana). The Andes and Patagonia also offer countless botanizing opportunities with a superb array of native ground orchids, Alstroemeria lilies and many others.
Far South Expeditions actively supports BirdLife bird conservation efforts as member of their “Species Champions / Preventing Species Extinctions” programmes since 2015.
In addition to that, they are active member of the “Adventure Travel Conservation Fund” (ATCF) run by the Adventure Travel Trade Association.
Far South Expeditions also support AvesChile / UNORCH, the Chilean Ornithologist Union, by sponsoring the publication of their scientific journal “Revista Chilena de Ornitología”. This is the most significant publication accruing professional ornithologists and amateur birders, promoting their research work and conservation efforts.
Far South Expeditions is involved in sponsoring the field work and conservation efforts of the critically endangered mainland population of Ruddy-headed Goose (Chloephaga rubidiceps). Few hundred individuals of these migratory geese breed, in the Magellan Straits and Tierra del Fuego. Far South Expeditions is financially and logistically supporting researchers to conduct their assessment on the genetic status and population figures of this goose.
Their company is deeply committed to environmental education and has produced, since our initial years, several publications and field guides, to educate and encourage the locals and visitors about the natural world. In 2016 we have published the long-awaited “Aves de Chile”, a field guide to the birds of Chile, in Spanish, which has been tremendously received by the eager local audience. We think that this kind of efforts go in direct benefit of the conservation of our biodiversity and habitats as well as to increase the awareness of the locals in relation to their environment and its protection.
