Swimming with Dolphins

Few places in the world can offer the experiences with nature like the Kaikoura dolphin swim.

The dusky dolphins which reside along the Kaikoura Coast all year round are an outstanding species that delight and impress all those that participate on this special tour.  Dolphin Encounter Kaikoura offer two unique options, swimming with dolphins or staying on board and watching from the comfort of the boats.  It is not unusual to encounter large pods of Kaikoura dolphins easily numbering 200 animals or more.  Swimming with the Kaikoura dolphins is an unforgettable activity to take part in and an experience which is rated highly by those that have experienced it first hand.

All equipment for swimming with dolphins is provided for you.  All that is required is a swimsuit, a towel, warm clothing and a bag which is large enough to take your clothing on board with you. If you prefer you can join the tour as a watcher and travel on the same boat as the swimmers.  You will see dolphin activity and acrobatics that are simply spectacular as the sheer number of dolphins entertain and impress creating stunning images to capture very close to the boat. It is a photographers dream! To help you capture the best images both above the water and underwater, we have GoPro cameras available for hire.  Your footage and images are copied to a USB stick at the conclusion of the tour to ensure that you can relive the magic long after the tour has ended.

Alternatively you could visit their sister company Albatross Encounter which offer unprecedented close up views of a diverse array of seabirds including albatross, petrels, shearwaters, shags, terns and other species… all within close proximity of the Kaikoura Peninsula.

Dolphin Encounter Tree Planting New Zealand

The Encounter Foundation was established as a charitable trust in November 2009 by the partners in Encounter Kaikoura. By participating on the Encounter tours, (Dolphin Encounter Kaikoura and Albatross Encounter Kaikoura) each and every customer is assisting in protecting our very special natural environment.

The vision is to invest in and support the future wellbeing and sustainability of the local terrestrial and marine environment, for present and future generations, through tourism.

The objective of the Foundation is to focus on enhancing the natural environment by supporting a variety of projects, both locally and further afield.  Projects that range from restorative planting (with a view to encouraging the return of native birds) to sponsoring like-minded charitable purposes, beautification education initiatives and conservation.

Since the Trust commenced they are proud to have supported a range of projects from marine mammal research to studies on seabird populations and distribution, to replanting of native species and development of walkways, to supporting the establishing of a third colony for the Hutton’s Shearwater, a species endemic to Kaikoura.  There is also a range of other initiatives which you will find listed on their website.

So far in excess of $200,000 has been donated to worthy projects by the Encounter Foundation.
