Regal Sunbird
Found in Uganda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania.
The Regal Sunbird is a species of bird in the Nectariniidae family.
Is difficult to sight due to its camouflage, small size and cryptic behaviour even though
it gives a distinctive “prrrp” at five second intervals. During roosting in daylight, this species extends its ear tufts to give the impression of a tree branch, making it easily overlooked. Primary habitat is woodland, especially Mopane and Okavango.
Is a distinctively coloured bush-shrike bird species generally shy and retiring,
though when in close proximity to human habitation and gardens, it often becomes much bolder. It also has a very distinctive call which it makes in concert with its partner.

WOW….a million times over! My expectations were beyond exceeded. I could not believe how many gorgeous creatures, leopards, chimpanzees, gorillas and birds included, we saw, and how pleasant in all respects the trip was. Johnnie is a dream guide – he knows everything and tries to learn more, he likes to share his knowledge. He is just a genius, in my opinion – just a master guide. I could go on safari everyday with him! Words cannot express how breathless the trip left me.…. Show Less

Thanks a million to Agnes Joy K of Birding in Paradise Safaris Ltd. You not only organised today’s trip to Mabamba Swamp but drove us there and back in good cheer. You and Judith were fantastic tour guides and your knowledge of east African birds helped us positively identify many exotic birds we’d never seen before. You saved the best til last as the boat ride to get up close to a shoebill was thrilling! A rare bird and a prized ‘tick’ to be treasured forever. Can’t wait to come on on safari with you again :)))))))))))))))))))…. Show Less

It was a wonderful experience,it was my first time meeting Johnnie in person who proved to be the best of the best not only in wildlife but also, creating awareness on conservation to all the people we
encountered throughout the 10 days birding gorilla trip.
The route was amazing accommodations were great apart from the crested crane which should be Grey crowned crane.I wish more wildlife should be added to Lake mburo.
I must say thank you to Agnes and Johnnie for making that trip a success.…. Show Less

My wife and I have gone on birding and general wildlife tours on six continents and to over 30 countries. As a result, I speak from experience when I say that our recent birding and gorilla trekking tour with Birding in Paradise was one of the very best tours we have ever been on. There are a number of things that made this trip so enjoyable and productive, but they really boil down to Johnnie and Agnes.
Agnes works in the office and takes care of all of the pre-trip details. I don’t think that I ever sent Agnes an e-mail that wasn’t promptly answered in less than a day. Her helpful information about climatic conditions, visa applications, post-trip accommodations and many other inquiries was excellent. I thank her very much for the wonderful job she did.
Johnnie was amazing. His knowledge of the avifauna of Uganda resulted in us having a final trip list of over 350 species of birds. This included unique, secretive and or rare species. Among these were shoebills, finfoots, African Green Boradbills, Green-breasted pittas, white-backed night heron and a host of Albertine Rift endemics. His knowledge is not limited to the birds as he has extensive knowledge of the mammals as well. He and Agnes arranged a gorilla trek for us while we were staying at Bwindi National Park. It was an amazing experience to spend an hour with the magnificent animals. During our birding trip we were able to observe, often in great detail, 29 other species of mammals.
Johnnie is, in addition to his ability to located and then assist us in locating the birds and mammals, an extremely enjoyable travel companion. He is extremely friendly, has a marvelous sense of humor, and has a deep love and concern for the environment.
Our accommodations at all six locations where great. All of our rooms were comfortable and spacious with comfortable beds and excellent bathrooms. Meals were well-prepared and varied. The staff at the various locations were fun and a pleasure to be around.
Our vehicle was a very comfortable and reliable Toyota Landcruiser with a pop-up top for game viewing.
I strongly recommend that if you want to do a private birding or general wildlife tour of Uganda that you select Birding in Paradise.…. Show Less

Hi, Johnnie,
Just a quick thank you for our recent Birding Tour with you which was delightful from beginning to end. We saw over 400 species with you in 15 days of which 91 were lifers for us. We haven’t finished going through the 10,000+ photos we took yet but you will be pleased to know that Roland was able to get his camera fixed. 🙂 The whole tour was well organised from beginning to end and we stayed in some truly wonderful spots. We particularly appreciated your arranging for us to eat local food throughout – it was very good of the lodges to comply with this request and we are appreciative of their co-operation. I have not finished my full report yet because I have been tied up with Jury Service since our return, but as soon as I have completed it, I will send you a copy. Here is a foretaste:
“We used Johnnie K Kamugisha of Birding in Paradise Safaris. We had met and talked to him a few times at Bird Fair where he had impressed us with his enthusiasm. He and Agnes were very helpful when we were planning an itinerary and were always prompt in answering all our queries, no matter how small. Johnnie is well-travelled and speaks excellent English. He is friendly cannot be faulted on his birding skills, calling them all the time and spotting the tiniest of birds in an instant. He rarely uses play-back as he is so good at imitating and calling in birds himself, having veritable conversations with them. He cracked me up every time he saw a bird and charted its progress as it was just like listening to a football commentary! When we arrived, we told Johnnie we didn’t want any rubbish international food but preferred to eat local food so he telephoned ahead and arranged exactly that everywhere we stayed. We very much appreciated him making the effort and are very grateful to ALL the lodges we stayed in for acquiescing to this request. We ate some truly excellent food and are hoping that our favorite takeaway in Preston can introduce Rolex to their menu. “…. Show Less
